Voltaire famously complained that if all the pieces of the true cross were real, the cross must have consumed all of the forests of Lebanon. But Voltaire was a slanderer and satirist.
In truth, tiny splinters of the True Cross were placed in hundreds of churches, but the combined weight of most all of them would add up to one baseball bat. There are a few much larger pieces.
Think of it: suppose the True Cross weighed 50 kg (110 pounds). Many of the spliters weigh as little as 1/10th of a gram. So, that’s 500,000 potential relics.
OTOH, I doubt that was the main reason anyone protested the Catholic Church.
I will save the debate over relics for another time. Certainly the building and art work is a great loss
