Had to pick up a few things on the way home tom work last night. Had one of the usually lackadaisical grumpy checkout witches from the mob blocking the door get in my face yelling at me that they were on strike.
I told her “Good luck with that” and went into the store to get what I needed for dinner. With all of the other stores in my area with better prices and better quality food, I don’t believe I’ll be shopping and Stop & Slop after the strike is over. Hope the angry witches enjoy their new jobs when S&S is gone.
I’ve only seen them in Vermont - not in Connecticut
Several of the stores in my area were closed yesterday, but the ones that were open seem to have a decent number of people crossing the picket line. It was hard to tell how many to drop by for support into the shop or just left but in my 5 to 10 minutes watching at least a half a dozen maybe even more people had entered and left the store with groceries.
I’ve also seen a few videos he members post that line of them harassing customers crossing the picket lines, calling them scabs, screaming in their faces, etc. Then once they get to their car they we’re asking them selves how dare they do that? I can guarantee that many of these customers will not come back after the strike is settled, especially the ones That have been yelled and screamed at by the strikers.
I am willing to bet there are discussions at Stop & Shop right now about lists of underperforming stores that may be on the chopping block in the very near future, something I doubt the strikers ever thought about before they see the little temper tantrum.
When the strike is over, I’m not going back there. The only reason why we ever shop there is because it’s the closest store and we haven’t done a full shopping trip there in years - just a last minute pick of one or to things we need.
I totally agree that they’re alienating their customers. As I told the the mob trying to stop me from getting in the store, “Good luck with that.”
I rarely do a full trip as S&S either. In CT the biggest traditional competitor in Big Y. They have comparable prices but better service, while S&S has similar prices but worse service. Plenty pf places like Wal-Mart, Target, Aldi, Costco, etc. offer the same merchandise at lower prices.
The employees at S&S who do work hard deserve a good salary/benefits but far too many are lazy, disinterested, etc. and should have been fired years ago but are protected by the Union. ON a few Union FB pages they keep talking out how thy are the best ever and perform/have “specialized” skills, how they care about customer service, etc. and how thy are “Union Strong,” all while they turn most of their customers away to shop at a competitor.
Of course! I think I mentioned Big Y (there are at least 3 of them near me), but I forgot about Price Chopper. And of course Target and Wal-Mart have grocery stores, too.
It will be interesting to see how this Stop & Shop situation will end...
And (I can attest to this): Excellent medical care and hospitals. Also beautiful coastlines and countrysides.
Just about everything else sucks about the liberal, deep-blue northeast though, lol.
Same here. Over the years, I've grown to love smaller family-owned grocery stores in my area. Yeah, I might pay a few bucks more for some items, but the food is (usually) just as good or better, and the employees are helpful and courteous, as opposed to the mostly surly Stop & Shop employees. Plus I can zip around the smaller stores MUCH faster than the overly huge Stop & Shop big box store.
As big as the stores are, Stop and Shop doesn't always have the greatest selection of items in some cases. I don't like how they've taken items I've loved off their shelves, substituting their own brands instead.
I've seen more choice / variety of items in newer Big Y stores (and other CT grocery stores), and newer Publix stores in the South.
Also... this is one consistent thing that has gone on over the years at my local Stop & Shop, it never fails: Every time the sun is shining and/or it's a beautiful day, I stand in the checkout lines 10x longer than usual because so many checkers call in "sick" that day (usually the young people). Infuriating.
I've complained to S&S online about this, but nothing is ever done. Doesn't happen at the other grocery stores I visit, except other big box stores like Target and Wal-Mart.
I don’t know why they employees are so gung-ho with their union. My oldest boy worked there when he was in college. He was very conscious, never called in sick, always worked the schedule he was given. Then he asked in advance if he could have his birthday off - which he was entitled to according to the union agreement. He his boss told him no, he could not have that day off. So he tried to contact the union. Never heard back from them.
He found a better job somewhere else very soon after that incident.
Interesting story. Good for your son! :-)
Consider this. If your manager can come out of his air conditioned office, remove his tie and immediately take over for you on your job, how skilled and valuable are you really?
BTW, one of my first teenage jobs was working at a supermarket. I bagged groceries, shagged carriages in the parking lot, stocked shelves, etc. So I'm not knocking the work. But I never considered that I would be doing those jobs at a supermarket as an adult, unless I was on the management side of things. Working at the supermarket was just getting my foot in the door career-wise.
Which reminds me of a John Updike short story called "A&P". Not a bad read and it kind of summed up what supermarkets were like when I worked in them.
Time to treat them like Ronald Reagan’s ATC strikers. There are still plenty of out-of-work people who would love to have those jobs.
Big deal. My Sunday pay is 1.25 and my Sunday night pay is 1.10, same as weeknights.* Suck it up, folks, since we're still in a depression.
My holiday pay for working on a holiday is 1.5, hee hee.
I think Dunkin’ is fine. Not great, but fine. If you truly want Bottom-of-the-Barrel, get Krispy Kreme. JMO.
