Joe Manchin considering running for governor in 2020

Joe Manchin is considering challenging Jim Justice in 2020 for West Virginia governor, telling Politico that he's "thinking about" running for the "best job in the world."

Manchin told Politico he will make a decision this fall.

"I don't think there's any hurry at all," Manchin said.

The Democratic senator served as West Virginia's governor from 2005-2010. He won a special election in 2010 to serve the remainder of Robert C. Byrd's term in the Senate, following his death in June of that year.

Manchin defeated Attorney General Patrick Morrisey by 3 percentage points in 2018 in his bid for reelection. His current term ends in 2025.

President Trump will be up for reelection in 2020. He visited West Virginia on multiple occasions in 2018 to campaign on behalf of Morrisey. Governor Justice announced at a 2017 Donald Trump rally that he was leaving the Democratic party.

“Campaigns [are] the best part of politics," Manchin told Politico. "Can’t be any tougher than what I came through, an off-year election when they concentrated all their money against you."

Could he pick his own replacement?

Does he have to resign to run? My guess would be no.

RE: Does he have to resign to run? My guess would be no.

No he does not. I believe Paul Ryan did not resign his congressional seat when he ran for VP in 2012.

Of course Manchin has to give up his senate seat if he wins the election for governor.

So if he would run and win, he would appoint his replacement in the senate until a special election in 2022.

Joe Manchin wants out of the Democrat freak show that is now the House & Senate. In the WV Governor slot, he can cruise to an easy retirement.

If he really had common sense and street smart brains, Manchin would switch parties from Democrat to Republican right now and get out of the Democrat Senate insanity freak show!!!

He acts like a Republican half the time now so not that big a win.

In other words, his character can be placed in the "wishy-washy" column . . .maybe spineless.

Its says Manchin's term as senator runs through 2025. So if Manchin wins the governorship in 2020, would he not then appoint his successor until a special election is held?

I think each state has its own rules. In this case, probably not. There was an article earlier today that a democrat judge announced his intention to run for political office and his state's statutes caused him to lose his judgeship because he merely announced his intentions. Sorry I don't have the state or the details, its been a long day.

While each state can have its own rules to a point, I think the courts are fairly picky about the states telling federally elected people what to do.

“He acts like a Republican half the time now so not that big a win.”

If only he did. Murkowski has a more conservative record than Manchin, at least on judges. Just lost week, she supported McConnell on killing off the 30 hour rule - Manchin did not.

Now if Manchin did flip parties, he probably would vote as a mainstream Republican. But as long as he’s a Democrat, he will behave that way, at least when it counts.

People like to think Joe is some kind of conservative, the likes of a Zell Miller, and maybe many years ago he was. But, per his votes in the Senate, he is well to to the left of Mitt Romney, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.

Once he escapes from under Schumer's thumb, will he act more conservative as a governor? Maybe. I'd rather have his in the Gov's mansion than the Senate.

WV used to charge a 6% sales tax on groceries. 'Though gradually, Manchin elliminated that.

I didn't find him to be too bad a governor. But you have to realize, all I had to compare him to was Wise here in WV and 57 years of vermin, both R & D in New York.

I think he just won his last Senate election either way. Playing half-way with the party of AOC is untenable in WV.

If he’s ELECTED Governor we’ll probably gain his Senate seat in a 2022 special election after the scum he appoints serves for the better part of 2 years. Meanwhile he’ll be mismanaging state government and crushing the poor people of West VA.

If he loses, he’s still a Senator until Jan 2025.

So there is no reason to hope he runs, cause maybe getting his Senate seat 2 years before it will be up anyway is not worth inflicting his corrupt regime on the people of West Virginia who deserve a better Governor.

I think it’s just more proof Manchin is bored serving in DC. He shouldn’t have run for reelection if he had no intention of serving out the full 6 years. He ought to just quit now and have Gov. Justice appoint AG Morrisey to the seat, as he should’ve been the winner.

Manchin won’t beat Justice, anyhow.
