Russia won a dispute about “national security” at the World Trade Organization on Friday, in a ruling over a Ukrainian railway dispute that may also lend support to global automobile tariffs that could be imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The WTO panel ruling, the first ever on the right to a national security exemption from the global trade rules, can be appealed. The panel also confirmed the WTO’s right to review national security claims, denting U.S. claims that national security was not subject to review by the global trade body.

The panel also confirmed the WTO’s right to review national security claims, denting U.S. claims that national security was not subject to review, and said any such claim should be “objectively” true, relating to weapons, war, fissionable materials or an “emergency in international relations”.

The assumption that tariffs are between two countries is why most pundits fail to understand how they can be used. When you are a low cost labor provider there are several countries ready to step in and take your place when a tariff makes you no longer the lowest cost provider.

That’s mighty white of the court to rule that if you are at war with a nation, you can also break trade deals without worrying about pesky lawsuits.

Probably a majority of "White Hispanic" judges on the court.

The opposite is true according to the article. WTO didn’t interfere with national security matters in this case but recognized such as a ground for regulations. A sort of pro-nationalist WTO ruling.

Tariffs were what fhe Founders advocated instead of export tax on income by workers producing exportable goods.

If tariffs never work, the income tax to replace them is national suicide.

Re-read the second paragraph. They ruled for Russia in this case but also restated their right to overrule national governments when they want to, which the Trump administration doesnt recognize.

It is an empty sentence so far. The precedent is about respecting national security concerns in nature.

You are the one obsessed with Pat.

Tariffs are the only way to go. You promote foreign economies but you raise your infrastructure with their economy instead of penalizing your own citizens building your economy.

This was a fundamental tenet of the Founding of America.

It is not Bs, it is what works if you want to preserve a nation. It is not a communist thing , it is a common sense thing. Both the Swiss and Chinese apply this principle and started out both as the poorest nations in the 20th century.

Believe me, the Austrians were for free trade, but would have never let the Chinese walk all over our faces raising tariffs on our stuff to fund their power to rule the world. We are destroying our own capitalist system with income taxes on our exports and empowering foreign companies while stiffling our own.

The economy is a derivative of a system of legalities and private properties, starting with your own private nation building. What you are advocating is banning toll roads which are at the foundation of any legal system.

The economy is not the orginator, but the entity beholden to the master allowing it.
