The 1930s fresco mural by Ann Rice O’Hanlon was painted as part of the federal Public Works of Art Project. It shows Lexington’s history from its settlement in a series of scenes. In one, black men and women are planting tobacco, and in another, a Native American man holds a tomahawk. Various efforts to remove the mural have been made since at least 2006.
In 2015, in response to a meeting with a group of black students, Capilouto ordered the mural to be shrouded. Then after meeting for a year, a UK task force said the mural should be uncovered, but accompanied by more contextual information and art. In 2018, UK commissioned prize-winning artist Karyn Olivier to add to the space, which she did with a gold painted dome emblazoned with figures from the mural and other historical minorities from Kentucky’s history.

Washington Jr. during recruitment.
“You have the power to remove the mural or cover it up,” student Daniel Beasley told Capilouto. “This is a moment in time when people of color and marginalized communities are hurting ... take this step for the people of color on campus. We have experienced enough trauma.”

I suspect this “Hunger Strike” wasn’t the Bobby Sands-type Hunger Strike.
Are any of the university students history majors?
Have the little schitzheads sign a roster and tell the dumbazz parents to come get the bodies or skeletons or what ever.
Only when there is no art at all will they begin to understand what they have done...if then. It’s going to be a bland world.
Granted, it is not the most attractive work of art....but it is a true fresco which is in itself worth keeping as part of a program including art history and study of art techniques.
The irony is the black students organization [which claims to represent all black students though I doubt all black students have a say in what it does] wants this thing gone because it reminds them of the very past from which they derive their group identity and gives them the excuse they need to have a segregated group of their own. If they succeed in disposing of imagery of the past then what will thy have let to make whites feel guilty that their ancestors enslaved their ancestors?
Should we also quit teaching about Spartacus’ slave revolt or making movies about Rome and persecution of Christians because it makes the descendants of Roman slaves, or descendants of Christians that were fed to the lions feel uncomfortable to be reminded of their one-time status?
If anything the 1930s fresco - supposedly the only true fresco in the country- probably makes more whites uncomfortable than blacks, depicting as it does not just slavery but racial and class segregation and likely other uncomfortable historical facts of life as well. It’s not just an example of the fresco technique but an example of 1930s attitudes and morality or the lack thereof that could be used in teaching about the period - and that it was done by a woman in a time when men still dominated the arts makes it a part of women’s history as well and not just black history or Kentucky history.

How do they know that the black men and women shown planting tobacco were supposed to be slaves? Can non-slave black men and women not plant tobacco?
