Democrats blocked a GOP effort Tuesday to change Senate rules and speed up confirmation of most of President Trump’s nominees, leaving Republicans with few options other than a “nuclear” confrontation.
The rules change has become a major test of political wills, with Republicans saying Democrats are treating Mr. Trump unfairly compared to past presidents. Democrats counter that Mr. Trump’s picks are so bad that they deserve the obstruction.
Tuesday’s vote was 51-48, leaving the GOP well shy of the 60 needed to overcome Democrats’ filibuster.
In the wake of the vote, Republicans seemed resigned to going “nuclear.”
“This needs to stop, Democrats know it needs to stop. We intend to stop this abuse of the rules this week,” said Sen. Roy Blunt, chairman of the Rules Committee.
The GOP is eyeing what’s become known as the “nuclear option,” which uses a shortcut method to change the understanding of Senate rules.
In this case, the change would effectively cut the maximum debate time available on most presidential nominees from 30 hours to two hours.
It’s similar to a change Democrats orchestrated in 2013 for President Obama’s nominees. But with Mr. Trump now in office, Democrats say they’re no longer eager to give up their chance to erect roadblocks.

Nuclear option is obsolete. There’s no point in honoring the rule when Democrats take over the Senate, they will go nuclear on everything.

They should do this immediately and then Remove ALL Democrats from every committee, allow them only 1 member per committee, Tip Oneill would approve.
Hard to imagine they expected a different result than they got. All done for show, apparently. Just killing time and wasting money. That’s all the Senate seems to do.

Yes, how long and how many senators does it take to make a decision so they can take a vote and move on? Seems like they are instead running out the clock.
Mike Lee was the only Repub to vote with the Dems.
Kamala Harris didn’t vote.
