WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on Saturday will call for a significant federal investment in teacher pay, a campaign aide says, the first policy proposal that she has put forth since officially launching her 2020 campaign.
At a rally in Houston, Harris will argue that the U.S. faces a teacher pay crisis that requires a national response and will commit to closing the teacher pay gap during her first term as president, the aide said.
Harris' campaign is citing a study from the liberal-leaning Economic Policy Institute that found that what's called the "teacher pay penalty" - the difference in compensation for teachers and comparable public workers - is larger than ever. The Economic Policy Institute study puts the teacher compensation penalty at a record-high 11.1 percent in 2017.

Many, many companies have tried this strategy over the years.
It only results in undercompensated dead wood being replaced by overcompensated dead wood.

What gap? Teachers work 9 months for a 12 month salary. They get paid nicely. Their fault if they give a portion to union thugs. And if they don’t like their salary, let them go get a new job, move if need be.

What is the teacher pay gap?
It does not exist. Many teachers are OVERPAID, especially after accounting for benefits and pensions. A lot of them don’t even correct work honestly anymore: everyone passes.

Camel Harris should hold seminars on how she got into politics via Willie Brown, ya think?

Well said. Obviously paying more into a failed system is a very bad way to correct it. Gongress itself is a perfect example of that.
Congress needs a budget, not a blank check.

Im all for paying public school teachers more but their salaries need to be based on a measurable metric that shows the learning success of the kids of whom they teach. The flip side, that same metric needs to be used to ferret out and remove those teachers who are not performing and the tenured position of any teacher/professor needs to be wholly eliminated. Also, the k to 12 teaching standards and curriculum need to be set in place and be same in every public school throughout this country. Public schools need to go back to teaching the three Rs, US History, Civics and mandatory physical education in all public schools.

NO!
Teachers are 'contracted' to work X number of days per year.
Many districts allow the teacher to select getting paid for 9 or for 12 months. The amount paid is the same. It is just divided by 9 months of paychecks or 12 months of paychecks.
