To: a little elbow grease
#18 Today, the average college freshman in the United States reads at a 7th grade level.

The question that I have:

Is this today's 7th grade level, or is it what was the 7th grade level in 1964? Based on my experience with the current public school system, my 7th grade reading level 1964 exceeds today's 12th grade level hands down. No, I am not exaggerating.

Speaking as a guy who graduated from high school in 1964 I'd say you are probably correct (depending on your particular school district).
