Not so sure of that. Russia doesn’t need Venezuela.

Why Russia wants Nicolas Maduro to stay in charge of Venezuela - National

By Josh K. Elliott National Online Journalist, International Global News

Why is Russia defending Nicolas Maduro‘s claim to the presidency in Venezuela despite international pushback? Simply put, the South American country owes the Kremlin a lot of money and oil, experts say.

Maduro is also an important ally for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has built his reputation at home on his ability to project Russia’s power into parts of the world where the Soviet Union once held sway.

Venezuela has more oil reserves than Saudi Arabia.

They think they need Cuba though. And Cuba defiantly needs Venezuela or they are done for. Cuba uses fuel oil to generate electricity. 80% of which comes from Venezuela. Cuba can produce roughly 50% of their needs but it is very high sulfur crude and very hard on generation equipment so they use more imported oil than domestic. So indirectly Russia does need Venezuela because they will never give up Cuba or let them go without electricity. Asking Russia to give up Cuba would be like asking us to give up our base in Germany. Never going to happen.
