I tried to explain how the biased media, was making race relations worse, on purpose, and she said I sounded like a racist (which I am not or never have been).

IMO, you should have stopped after "I sounded like a racist". There's no need to to explain to anybody who calls you that. Doing so just reinforces their belief in the power of that word.
