New Zealands government is responding to the Christchurch attacks by pledging to ban all semiautomatic rifles.
The Newstalk ZB reports that Attorney General David Parker announced the pending ban on semiautomatic rifles during a vigil in Auckland. He couched the announcement in comments about a dimming of enlightenment in various places around the world.
The Guardian reports that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also plans to focus on the ease with which legal weapons can be modified to become military-style assault rifles, which are more strictly controlled.

not 24 hours.
They can’t even begin mourning but go after the guns.
Do they go after immigration problems?
No, they go after the guns.
Do they even try to analyze what this guy’s problems were? No - they just deny everyone’s rights.
This - makes it a political hit.
Well they already have a ban on murder ...
No 2A rights in NZ. If the can grant permission, they can revoke permission.
I wonder how many will refuse to turn in their long guns and how many the government will kill to make NZ defenseless?
(I'm lookin' at YOU, Chuck Schumer ...)
Stupid move by leadership (/sarcasm). They will need those guns in the future. They just won’t admit it now.
I don’t own a semi-auto rifle or pistol. But I will keep mine. And I reload for them. And only an idiot accepts being disarmed.
Nuts.
Governments have killed many millions of more people than crazy people with guns.
1 Kiwis can look forward to losing even more of their rights in the near future.

Jacinda Kate Laurell Ardern, 38 yoa, is the current Prime Minister of New Zealand. She is a member of the Labour Party. Ardern has described herself as a social democrat, a progressive, a republican and a feminist, citing former NZ PM Helen Clark as a political hero, and has called capitalism a "blatant failure" due to the extent of homelessness in New Zealand.
She advocates a lower rate of immigration, suggesting a drop of around 20,00030,000. Calling it an "infrastructure issue", she argues, "there hasn't been enough planning about population growth, we haven't necessarily targeted our skill shortages properly". However, she wants to increase the intake of refugees.
Ardern believes the retention or abolition of Māori electorates should be decided by Māori, stating, "[Māori] have not raised the need for those seats to go, so why would we ask the question?" She supports compulsory teaching of the Māori language in schools.
On social issues, Ardern voted in favour of same-sex marriage and believes abortion should be removed from the Crimes Act. She is opposed to criminalising people who use cannabis and has pledged to hold a referendum on whether or not to legalise cannabis in her first term as prime minister. In 2018, she became the first prime minister of New Zealand to march in a gay pride parade.
Referring to New Zealand's nuclear-free policy, she described taking action on climate change as "my generation's nuclear-free moment".
Raised as a Mormon, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ardern left the church in 2005 because, she said, it conflicted with her personal views; in particular her support for gay rights. In January 2017, Ardern identified as "agnostic".
Her domestic partner is Clarke Gayford. On 21 June 2018, she gave birth to a girl becoming only the second elected head of government to give birth while in office (after Benazir Bhutto in 1990). On 24 June, Ardern revealed her daughter's given names as Neve Te Aroha. Neve is an anglicised form of the Irish name Niamh, meaning "bright"; Aroha is Māori for "love", and Te Aroha is a mountain in the Kaimai Range, near Ardern's home town of Morrinsville.
Be reasonable.
No one was ever murdered before the invention of the firearm.
No wars,. no fights over global warming. Everyone just sat around under a shade tree drinking a beer and enjoying their freedoms.
Now my opinion is that there are not enough guns nor is there enough common sense, especially in the clergy and the schools.
Every church and every school should have armed guards, whether hired guns or members/employees and they should be armed with AR-15’s, AR-10’s or their choice of similar weapons.
A single stack 9mm is not sufficient.
Also of note, I have not read of nor have I seen a single security system video of one of these mass killing events.
Every religious facility and every school should have a security system and a designated person to monitor the camera’s output.
Such a system would warn the armed members in time to take preventive action.
Of course it would be expensive and a lot of trouble to operate, but it would be a lot more fun than mass funerals.
Ya think she ain’t livin’ high on the hog? And, it appears that her hometown,”.... home town of Morrinsville.” was misspelled. MORONSville I believe is correct.
So when muslims do a mass shooting the left argues that only a small number of them are involved so we should not punish all of them. When a white gun owner does a mass shooting the left immediately acts to punish gun owners.
Besides, when moose limbs do it, it’s part of their cultural heritage so it’s okay.
Firearm rights don’t come from the 2A, they come from God. The basic human rights everyone on earth has. The US put it in the constitution to protect it, but it’s a basic human right.
That is so, but most governments disallow humans to enjoy that right.
The NZ Jihadists will have weapons, count on it.
A few hundred people die at the hands of crazed mass shooters each year.
Governments that disarmed their citizens murdered 262,000,000 of their own citizens in the twentieth century alone.
Which poses a greater threat to innocent people? Armed citizens or armed government?
