It is clear that there is no longer any rule-of-law and the police will do nothing to protect the homeowner or his family.
Plan for an appropriate response.
It has been that way for 2 decades now. And if you do shoot, the police will show up to haul your butt away.

He doesn't live in a subdivision. He lives in one of the nicest parts of the District -- with home values >$3M. (I drive through that subdivision at least once a week to/from a customer's office)
They have the tacit support of local politicians and the police are ordered to stand down.
The last time they showed up, the "protestors" broke down the front door. Nothing happened to any of them. The organizers have become overconfident in their ability to control the mob they are summoning. This time, somebody will likely be killed or seriously injured.
True enough.
But if you don't shoot, the mob is eventually going to burn down your house and kill your family while the police watch from a safe distance.
Either way, your former life is over. Might as well take down as many of the attackers as you can.
The courts have become useless for this sort of restitution. Other systems must be used.

If a mob with documented violence says they will show up and then they do, I think lethal self defense is justified, even on a large scale.
I would pick a 12 GA 3-inch mag cylinder choke with the #4 Buck that has about 42 pellets per shell. It may not be the most lethal shot size, but it would pay back the maximum number of communists.
