Apparently, it was more complicated than that. The grandfather was not a member of the Communist Party. That was the Polish United Workers' Party. The Polish People's Party was an anti-Communist opposition party.

Once the Communists took over things got muddier. The Polish People's Party was absorbed into the Communist Party. It was hard to say who was the opposition and who was part of the system.

But the grandfather was imprisoned at one point and was denied the right to emigrate.
