Perhaps riches *and* a guarantee of safety for himself and his 500 closest friends might do the trick.

People act like Kim actually runs everything even though is ability wake up every morning rests with the NK military leadership. He’s got some internal selling to do.

Would Kim rather rule a repressive regime, rule over a very poor country, but have nukes ??
Or would he rather take steps to join the rest of the world economy, but then expose his people to outside influences?
The cult of personality surrounding the Kim family may well weaken if they open to the outside world. Perhaps Kim’s desire to be worshipped overrides everything else.

Kim is actually king in all but name. Even in less repressive communist countries (i.e. China or Cuba), decision-making usually comes down to one person who can have anyone else in the government (not to mention outside of the government) detained or killed simply by issuing an order. They are all basically kings with politically-correct titles, and their direct reports are aristocrats except the titles don’t say duke, marquess or earl.

But in the end, they are all sitting on that throne only with the permission of the echelons immediately below him.
History is filled with examples of inner circles in a dictatorship or monarchy turning on them.
With a single mistake, he could be standing blindfolded, there waiting for the ZU23-2 AAA gun to open fire. An he knows it.

It’s a fairly low likelihood. The typical reason is that that the people in that inner circle trust each other less than they trust him. And that is usually by design - he deliberately appoints people who don’t like each other and are ideally not related or even on speaking terms. He also occasionally prunes that circle in order to put the fear of God into the rest. That is why dynastic histories are replete with the removal and execution of what seem to be loyal and effective retainers. The more effective such an individual is, the higher the odds he will be able to remove the king and put himself on the throne. Kingship is an enviable role, which is why so many have risked it all to get there. A king is like a farmer where the livestock includes all the people within a nation’s borders.

The reason is simple. The North Koreans are told they enjoy the highest standard of living in the world. They are told, night and day they and their culture, their society are the envy of the world. Once this charade comes to be seen for what it is Kim is finished and he knows it. So does the North Korean military. At least those old farts in the big hats with the chests full of medals know it and they know the people would tear them apart.

Kim and his cronies could end up like the dictator of Romania, Nicolae Ceaușescu, who when his repressive regime fell was summarily shot. Kim so has to be concerned with war crime trials for crimes against humanity should he even succeed in fleeing to exile.

Hillary and company’s brilliant idea to assassinate Qaddafi after he disarmed makes it a hell of a lot harder for Trump to negotiate with Kim. The Bloomberg article conveniently overlooks that fact.

Maybe they are just risk averse, and prefer the devil they know, to one they don’t.
The cost of a mistake can really high over there.

This is a bullshit opinion by Hercovivks or whatever his name is. I lived in VN for a couple of years and commies love Western stuff, especially if they can hide it from their comrades. A Mercedes, that would be a problem.
Arabs get on planes in their robes, etc., but within moments of takeoff, they have changed into designer jeans, donned jewelry and Rolexes. On arrival back home, all that bling in packed away and they’re ready to condemn anyone stepping the least little bit out of line.
