i would say one difference between the two is the Vietnamese didn’t have long term plans to destroy us in the states.
There were no Vietnamese terrorist attacks in the states and no vast terrorist network aimed at destroying us.
they wanted us out and unfortunately we let them win.
But it ended there.

we defeated the Vietnamese. Lock stock and barrel. We didn’t defeat the Chinese who poured in to fight in their stead. And rather than take on mainland China, we backed off.
