The purpose here is simple, he wants to goad Trump into firing him in order to generate amazing outrage and headlines that will totally bury the news that the report is a dud.

The more I think about this, the less I think mueller would be dumb enough to indict a Trump. Trumps have unlimited resources and would fight back hard and get disclosure of sources that initiated the investigations. The people mueller indicted had/have limited resources. Mueller my be stupid, but he is not that dumb. JMHO.

My guess: Trumps will be spared. Some close associates will be burned. They’re making it hard for anyone working with or thinking about working with the Trumps.

Is it possible some of the weasels that we’re working to bring down the President will be indicted? Probably not. But I’m hoping the report might have some sort of “silver lining.”
