When New Jersey schools begin teaching students about LGBTQ history, it will be easy enough to say Walt Whitman was a great poet, who, by the way, also happened to be gay.
But thats not the point of a new state law, and the stakes are so much higher than a token reference, historians and advocates say. If done right, New Jersey will help set the national agenda for teaching kids about gender and sexuality throughout history and across all subjects, exposing students to a past thats largely been ignored.
This isnt about rainbow pompoms and cheering for gay people throughout history, said Don Romesburg, a Sonoma State University professor of womens and gender studies who helped guide Californias first-in-the-nation inclusive curriculum. Its about teaching how systems of gender and sexuality change over time and how people respond to that.
Former state lawmaker Reed Gusciora helped pass the law that assures the lavender chapters of history will finally be told, making New Jersey the second state to mandate an LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum. It requires schools teach middle- and high-schoolers about the political, economic, and social contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, starting in 2020-21,
Guscioras inspiration came when he taught a class on LGBTQ politics at one of New Jerseys top public colleges, and he found out his students were virtually clueless.
Most had barely learned anything about LGBTQ history in school or anywhere else and couldnt identify major icons such as Harvey Milk, he said.
These were college students," said a stunned Gusciora, who is now the first openly gay mayor of Trenton. "And they specifically took a class in LGBTQ politics.

Wonder how they are going to do the “Lincoln was Gay” unit?
In 50 years there will be reports of the Horrors associated with this program. Something like this can come up no good. Why can’t we let children be children and develop their natural child hood interests rather than Force this junk on them at such an early age.
Walt Whitman was a great poet, who, by the way, also happened to be gay.
Explains his hate for Emily Dickinson so much
And then they will ignore ones like Jefferson, Madison, Washington, and even Lincoln as they were a bunch of racist white heteros, eh?
What it’s really about is adult sex with children.
I remember when NJ Public schools were the top in the nation, now they are just pervert indoctrination centers
“What its really about is adult sex with children.”
They’re just trying to teach these kids to look up to gay people...while positioned on their knees.
What its really about is adult sex with children.

BINGO!
That’s what’s next, normalizing pedophilia.
What did Milk do except be in the wrong place at the wrong time?????
What about how some butts get exposed to AIDS and how they respond to that?
It is long past time to abolish government schools. The very idea of government schooling is evil; education should be part of the private civil society.
Why don’t we look at all the great historical figures who smoked? Then we could use them to advocate in favor of cigarette smoking.
Will they talk about Harvey Milk’s work on behalf of Jim Jones and The Peoples’ Temple?
Another step towards forcing everyone to APPROVE of homosexuality, far from the original stated goal of just coming out and living their lives in the open.
"Chapter 1: Sodom and Gomorrah ..."
Homosexuality doesn’t make anyone “great”.
There have been some “great” people who happened to be homosexual. Who cares? It’s not special. It’s not interesting.
When was the last time a parent got excited and cerebrated when there kid tells them they are gay? No parent ever.
