Analysis: GOP senators struggle to escape no-win border vote

WASHINGTON (AP) — One by one, the Republican senators floated their ideas. They were trying to find a way out of a seemingly impossible dilemma: how to support President Donald Trump's U.S.-Mexico border wall without approving the national emergency declaration he invoked to build it.

And one by one, during a private lunchtime meeting that ran hot at times, they found no easy answers.

As a deadline for voting looms, it's increasingly clear that Republican senators are deeply uncomfortable with Trump's use of executive power to build the wall and desperate to devise a way around the vote.

Senators know whatever they decide will make history. It's the first time Congress is voting to terminate a national emergency. Even if Trump vetoes the measure, as expected, it will set precedent for other money grabs by future occupants of the White House.

This is why they tried to talk Trump out of invoking national emergency powers and why they're now in a no-win situation as they prepare to vote.

"People are caught between the need for border security — and agreeing with what the president's trying to do — but not how he's trying to do it," said Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the senior-most Republican senator.

In the days ahead, senators will be required to vote on a resolution, already approved by Democrats in the House, to terminate Trump's executive action.

Senate Republicans don't have the votes to stop what Trump is doing, nor do they necessarily want to. Many of their constituents want the wall, and senators, especially those up for re-election in 2020, don't want to run afoul of the president whose supporters they'll need.

A couple of messages for these corrupt toilet scum posing as Republican Senator...

1. We will never forget and we will never forgive.

2. Congress ceded this power long ago. If that doesn't sit well with you, overturn the the law that codified it.

3. There will never be enough votes to overturn this POTUS veto. Yet you want to walk that plank and die over something you cannot affect?

Rhinos logic cracks me up. “We’d better not use it or the ‘RATs will abuse it when they get in office!”.

Since when to ‘RATs NOT abuse everything they can?

Do you think they’ll say: “Well we better not abuse National Emergency since Trump didn’t”.

Insane!

I don’t see how 300 deaths every week from the drugs flowing across the border is not a national emergency. That issue alone should be reason enough.

I’m hoping that it just keeps getting built at record speed and by the time they’re finished humming and ha-ing about it, it’ll be done.

I think as important as the 300 deaths a week from the drugs is the permanent costs we incur from the people who sneak in and live off our taxes forever more.

How many years has Congress not done its job authorizing funds to protect our southern border from invasion?

How many times have We The People put Republicans in power to protect our southern border from invasion?

Republic congressmen have failed every time. They should hang their heads in shame. Now, their only legitimate course of action is to embrace the President's legitimate Declaration of a National Emergency and BUILD THE WALL!

The same law that authorizes the President to declare a national emergency authorizes Congress to override that determination. So no new legislation is required.

WAY too late ***holes, you had two years [and in some cases, decades] to get it right.

This ship sailed years ago when every President since the enactment of the National Emergency Act used the powers delegated to them by the Congress. This is not an issue of the Congress power of the purse, Trump does not need to invoke the NEA to control the needed money. He needs the NEA authority to stymie the reindeer games that the Democrats are playing to delay and thwart Trump’s intent to deliver his promise. It is but one of the little dramas that illustrate the intent of the Democrats to overthrow the Trump Presidency. Any Republican Senator who acts to aid and abet these illegal actions should pay a big political price.

I can’t tell you how happy I am that DJT is smoking these dogs out into the open and making them vote on the wall. They’ve been hiding behind #FakeVotes and empty rhetoric for decades.

What utter bs. Do the job that WE THE PEOPLE have hired you to do. Simple. Looks like another day of calling on our schedules. Do they ever learn? Support our duly elected President. Time to replace our staff, apparently.

The President explained today that these Senators were worried that a future Democrat President might use his national emergency as a precedent to invoke something that conservatives would be unhappy with.

The President answered, “They’re going to do it anyway.”

I thought seriously about this. I could think of nothing a Democrat President could do according to the progressive agenda that would be constitutional. What President Trump is doing is entirely constitutional but a progressive socialist backed president would be outside the Constitution in declaring a national emergency.

the way these frightened little critters are acting like no president had ever used an executive order before. Do they think that if they stop Trump from using one, it will end the use forever? They sit quivering in the dark at the thought that another president might abuse that right?

Instead of worrying about executive orders, our critters need to start explaining why, our party isn’t running strong enough candidates to smoke any challengers? Why, they are allowing commies to sit amongst them. Why, they aren’t enforcing federal laws that protect our government from being infiltrated by foreign interests and divided loyalties? Answer those questions and a president using an executive order wouldn’t be so scary they have to hide under their beds.

Only if McConnell Allows it, he should tell them to POUND SAND and NO bills originating in the House except Mandatory Budget bills will be entertained.
