WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican and Democratic U.S. senators proposed legislation on Thursday that would let an estimated 72,000 Venezuelans remain in the United States after fleeing chaos in their country. Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Bob Menendez introduced the legislation along with Democrats Dick Durbin, Patrick Leahy and Cory Booker. It would immediately grant “Temporary Protected Status” to allow Venezuelans who passed security checks to remain in the United States for 18 months. There was no immediate indication of whether the Senate’s Republican leaders would allow the measure to come up for a vote.

I wouldn’t have thought there were so many Venezuelans in the USA. 75K at least? I’m guessing they are clustered together in some particular areas of the country.

I think many Haitians were allowed to stay after that last big earthquake. Stay on a temporary basis. When it was time for them to go back home, suddenly a lot of them went into shock.
If this is done again, the consequences of overstaying need to be made very clear from the beginning.

There should be no mercy for those that illegally entered the country.

I would not be opposed to a visa extension for those that legally entered the country.

More ‘RAT voters. They’ll be voting to make America just like the sh*thole they just ran away from.

With squishy government accounting, plus chain migration, that 72,000 will in reality be 5 or 6 million within a couple of years.

I knew this was coming. Wolfiwitz is in charge of the Venezuelan operation. Back during the Contra War, which he coordinated the Bush administration opened the floodgates to Nicaraguans and an estimated 700K to 1 M came here. Watch for the same crap being tried again.

Send them home and tell them to fight to take their country back. Give each of them an M-16 and a bunch of ammo as an “incentive!” This is just what happened in Kuwait when GHW Boosh let the “royal family” out while he used American blood and treasure to take Kuwait back from Saddam for them. Eighteen months, yeah, right! Just like we did for the Salvadorans twenty years ago, and they’re still here, suing us to be allowed to stay forever.

Rubio needs to be replaced.

18 months will turn into 18 years.

There is a real problem for those holding expired passports and identification. Are some of you talking about sending back elderly parents to that chithole? There’s a bureaucratic mess where visas cannot be renewed as a result. This is what TPS was designed for.

I’m not buying that. The conflict in Venezuela started in 2016, not twenty years ago.

One of two things will happen soon. Madero will leave, in which case Guido should welcome his people, including and especially the elderly, back to their home country, or, Madero won’t leave, in which case Madero should also welcome his people, including and especially the elderly, back to their homes. We’ll be happy to accept their planes.

Couldn’t another south American country, like Brazil, absorb these people?

I’ve been waiting for this, another TPS. Eighteen months will turn into 18 years and then forever. Once people get to the USA they won’t leave. Will fight like cornered animals to avoid going “home”. Once Dems get complete control of government there will be massive amnesties.

They’re not welfare recipients. The Venezuelans who have fled to the US probably have more money than the average non-Venezuelan American.

Venzuela was a wealthy, educated country before Chavez and then Maduro took over.

I think this is a good idea and their presence in the Latin American immigrant community might slow down the Dems attempt to co-opt it entirely for their own agenda.

The US can’t cure all the problems in the world. Let some other countries rise up and help with the burden.
