House Democrats exploded in recriminations Thursday over moderates bucking the party, with liberal Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez threatening to put those voting with Republicans “on a list” for a primary challenge.
In a closed-door session, a frustrated Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) lashed out at about two dozen moderates and pressured them to get on board. “We are either a team or we’re not, and we have to make that decision,” Pelosi said, according to two people present but not authorized to discuss the remarks publicly.
But Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), the unquestioned media superstar of the freshman class, upped the ante, admonishing the moderates and indicating she would help liberal activists unseat them in the 2020 election. Corbin Trent, a spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez, said she told her colleagues that Democrats who side with Republicans “are putting themselves on a list.”
“She said that when activists ask her why she had to vote for a gun safety bill that also further empowers an agency that forcibly injects kids with psychotropic drugs, they’re going to want a list of names and she’s going to give it to them,” Trent said, referring to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Triggering the blowup was Wednesday’s votes on a bill to expand federal background checks for gun purchases. Twenty-six moderate Democrats joined Republicans in amending the legislation, adding a provision requiring that ICE be notified if an illegal immigrant seeks to purchase a gun.
That infuriated liberals who have railed against ICE’s role in conducting mass deportations and embarrassed Democratic leaders who couldn’t keep their members in line on a high-profile bill.

Believe it or not, but that district even once sent a GOPer to the House because it had included Staten Island in it, then just parts of S.I., and now just bits and pieces of the Bronx and Queens. There's no telling what it will be like in 2020.

Also, NYC has ALWAYS been in flux, vis-a-vis which neighborhoods are good, which are bad, where different people live. For example, the Upper West Side of Manhattan was once, long ago, farm land or just empty spaces. Then it was the place where the rich elites WASPS lived, then upper middle class of various different ethnicities and religions, then lower class, now back to being mixed, but getting more middle and upper middle. And that's just one very small example.
The borough called The Bronx is named for an old Dutch elite family who owned most of the land there and who used it to farm.That borough has gone through so many different permuations, that I can't give a concise history of it. :-)
Right now, AOC's district has a LOT of "Hispanics" ( a LOT of damned ILLEGALS ALIEN INVADERS and some legal one ) in the Bronx, but also blacks and stupid whites; ditto the section in Queens...though less "Hispanics"; IIRC.

I think it's more that they protect incumbent Democrats rather than challenge them.
If representatives go completely rogue, the party Establishment might try to take them down, but for the most part, if you're in office you're in with the DNC and the DCCC, since they don't want to risk losing anything to the GOP.
There are groups like "Justice Democrats" who do finance challenges to Democrat incumbents, and they gave Congress Tlaib, Omar, and Ocasio-Cortez. Most of their challengers lost, though.
