Federal officials and energy experts offered their most blunt assessment to date regarding the ongoing vulnerability of the U.S. power grid, telling a Senate committee that solar-generated attacks alone cost $10 billion a year.
In testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Operations Committee, the officials noted that the attacks are growing and pose a substantial, long-term risk to a vulnerable power grid.
They warned that a catastrophic failure would cut off electricity to millions of Americans, probably for months at a time, causing untold damage and social chaos, adding that the grid is an easy target for solar, nuclear, and even small arms attacks by terrorists.
We are still incredibly vulnerable, Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said after hosting a two-hour roundtable to address poor grid security.

The Carrington event you mention would be an unimaginable catastrophe if it occurred in today’s technologically dependent world. I have been writing and warning about this for years but little is being done. Imagine no food or water or electricity for YEARS until new transformers are somehow built and transported into place. Armageddon.
That appears to be polar view of AOC’s fuzzy head with the coronal hole being where her brain used to be. Or maybe never was.
AOC will undoubtedly use this to promote the green new deal. Shell say that we need to build more solar panels to drain the sun of its power so it cant attack us.
“Ask me what it is like to be without power for 51 days straight”.
You’re right. But the idiots are making light of it.
I am aware of GMD and how it can impact the electric grid.
The article stated that it was a 10 billion dollar year impact currently.
Other than the 1989 impact on Canada, what is now costing 10 billion dollars?
We need to understand our enemy sun and get to know why he hates us and what grievances we’ve caused him. Maybe if he had more jobs. :)

Please explain how the sun damages our power grid. Also, what measures can our power companies take protect our power grid.
Thanks!
What it is like to be without power for 51 days straight?
Unbelievable. I don’t doubt it for a minute. If there’s a major power outage, they need to be shot of go to prison.
It would take a lot of bullets, and no one raindrop ever blamed itself for the flood.
You’re right. Disgusting, isn’t it.

I’ve contended for decades now that a sufficient number, say 20 per state,(number set by population) with ol fashioned 308s could put out enuf smaller transformers if all shot at same time to cause sheer calamity as the problem backs up the line to larger ones that could not be replaced for years ..Am I way off on this thought ?
Is this like the computer roll over in 2000???
I think the Cyber Attacks are what we need to worry about.
That said, a year ago somebody broke into an EMC Substation in N GA and shut it down completely. All 2,000 + customers were out and when the field man came to investigate the guy who caused it was still inside the gated sub.
SWAT was called to get him. He clearly knew how to operate the switches/circuits inside to shut it down.
Well sort of correct. Smaller residential transformers can be replaced/repaired/refurbished fairly easily. When you get above 500 kVA in size, that’s when the stock is slimmer and the turnaround time climbs.
I think there’s only a handful of companies making/refurbishing transformers on each coast.

I was told that the “biggys” come from Europe..we don’t even make them anymore. Oh well, so a few hunnert thousand get to keep their electricity huh?..../sarc
No way. There’s several manufacturers in NJ/NY and in CA.
Problem is that they take so darn long to build, that is the bigger ones.
But your fear is correct about a coordinated attack on the grid simultaneously.
