The Russian Orthodox Church expressed regret over a choir performance that featured a satirical Soviet-era song describing a nuclear attack on the United States in the midst of heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow.
The Feb. 23 performance by the St. Petersburg Concert Choir at the historic St. Isaacs Cathedral attracted widespread attention after it was posted on social media.
"Choir performances are held regularly in St. Isaac's Cathedral, and the fact that appropriate music is performed is not a problem," the press office of the Petersburg metropolitan said on February 26, according to Radio Free Europe. "But this song performed by a fairly well-known choir, of course, is surprising. We regret that this happened in St. Petersburg, and particularly in St. Isaac's."
During its performance to mark Defending the Fatherland Day, the choir sang an untitled song from 1980 that described Soviet submariners and bomber pilots preparing to launch a nuclear strike at the U.S. for three rubles. The lyrics include the lines: "On a submarine with an atomic motor/ And with a dozen bombs of a hundred megatons / Crossed the Atlantic and I call on the gunner: / Aim, I say, at the city of Washington!

A group of artists does something outrageous to get attention.
Film at eleven.
Who can’t find the humor in a song mentioning the destruction of US cities by nukes? :)
When did the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction become so alien?
You launch at us or we launch at you and even if only one sub manages to launch that is enough to take out a quarter of Russia or the U.S.
On the other hand, it was in a church, so it could be Prophecy. Maybe the USA is commercial Babylon. It is destroyed in one hour.
I, for one, am not in favor of erasing history. That song existed and reflected thoughts of the day. The reality is it didnt work out so well for the glorious USSR.
As long as Trump is out of town.
Sounds like they are due for a tour of American Ivy League universities
They apologized? Oh dear! How will our resident NeoCon Artists manufacture consent for further procative deep state operations in Eastern Europe and Asia now?
Unfortunately, Putin has been very obliging with his video threat of nuking Florida and his statements of willingness to have another Cuban missile crisis.
Wait, it isn’t about attacking America. Only DC gets mentioned.
It is a jokingly submariners’ Cold War song. Supposed to be sang with a guitar over a bottle of beer for a laugh. A sort of their version of ‘On a wing and a prayer’. One has to be a total idiot to take lyrics serious. It is deeply ironic.
You know that.
To assume most or even few do is a HUGE leap :)
And lyrics are written most of the time to be taken seriously.
I wrote songs.
I didn’t write the words to be taken as a joke :)
I meant what I wrote and believed in what i wrote a lot.
