Iranian navy launches massive naval drills that cover world’s key oil chokepoints

The Iranian navy launched a three-day naval exercise on Friday in the Persian Gulf that encompasses a wide expanse of ocean including the Strait of Hormuz and stretches to the Sea of Oman and northern portions of the Indian Ocean, according to state media reports.

Some news reports claim that the drills may go on for a week or more, but all of them are emphasizing the “large-scale” nature of the exercises which includes showcasing the Iranian navy’s newest and alleged domestically-produced cruise missile submarine Fatah and its newest Sahand destroyer.

The Fatah, or “Conqueror,” was celebrated during an event earlier this week, just days after Iran celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Islamic revolution. Iranian navy officials claim the sub is “state-of-the-art” and has the ability to remain underwater for five weeks.

“Ability to remain underwater for five weeks”

It can stay down much longer than that.

If we want it to.

President Trump has a button on his desk that can make it stay down forever.

Too funny, that Navy (that doesn’t cut and run) would be smoldering pile of oversized rubber zodiacs inside 36 hours.

I don’t think the Iranians understand oil choke points in todays market. The only thing they could choke is their own existence. The US has a surplus of oil and is a net exporter of oil. Now if they want to try and tow their little submarines over to North American to play with our forces I say bring it. We could always use some new artificial reefs in the GOM.

Or we could just do a “Hey, EU, you been talking about doing your own military, right? Here’s your chance. Do your Navy thing. See yeah later.”

Just the threat might raise the price of oil but if they make any effort anything of what they have becomes a target.

There's a video of the Russian version in action against a "small craft".

0600 orders from President Trump: “Sink the Iranian navy, destroy all subs, and aircraft.”

Reply from the naval commander: “Consider it done. The fly boys will be home for supper but the subs might take a day or two.”

The straits of Hormuz are a choke point. The navigable area in this choke point is actually miles wide. Yes, Iran could sink a few tankers but this would not stop navigation in the straits of Hormuz. To make it a true choke point Iran would need air and sea superiority. They do not have this. If they tried to close the Straits of Hormuz, their naval and near shore based assets would die very quickly. The insane mullahs might die also.

We should start charging the EU for each engagement that benefits them. Cash up front.
