A moratorium is needed on legal immigration. There shouldn’t be any visas granted to foreign students or HB1. We’ve got to get people to assimilate, or else we’re screwed.

If you think about it, the system is horrible. Not only is the illegal problem bad, the legal one is too.
When Art Bell wanted to bring his wife to America, he had to submit all the information they requested PLUS thousands of dollars. He had to do that at least two or three times (they always claimed to have lost his information which meant he had to give them the same information PLUS more thousands of dollars). He eventually found someone, a congressman or something to work interference for him.
Lots of money and time. Why? When it was all legal. It is almost like they enjoy stretching the legal process out, just cuz they can. And, where did the money go that Art had to fork over at least twice before his case was completed?
No one up to this point has seen fit to even look at it the issue of legal immigration. At least Trump has got someone looking into it. And maybe it won't be so difficult for legal people to get their business taken care of.

Well, Trump is a tough guy.
The BIG problem is that Tom Donahue of the U.S. Chamber is the Godfather, and he has perhaps 100 Senator Geary’s in the GOP House and Senate alone, on his payroll. He OWNS the GOPe, and Trump is simply going to have to make some kind of deal with him and his puppets.

I’m about as hard core Trumpian as one can get, but immigration is THE most important issue facing the country. It doesn’t even matter if other conservative policies are enacted in the next two or six years of a Trump administration.

As a long term Republican voter, I have almost nothing left in common with the party leadership. American companies need to hire Americans, not import foreigners. Need more STEM workers? Train what you need and pay them what they are worth.
Why would an American put in the time and expense of a hard STEM degree knowing they are competing against foreign nationals at 2/3 pay? Foreign workers drive down wages and suppress natural labor market forces, making it less likely for Americans to enter those fields.
Trump could threaten these Geary’s with his own offer they couldn’t refuse. If he threatened to campaign against them on the issue of immigration, they’d bend to him - or lose. But he’s not disciplined enough - or doesn’t care enough - to leverage his popularity with the base to truly remake the GOAp and wrest it away from the likes of Donahue
