Four names emerge for UN position: report
The Hill ^ | Feb 18, 2019 | Miranda Green

Posted on 02/18/2019 7:08:04 PM PST by CondoleezzaProtege

The White House has narrowed down its search for the next United Nations ambassador to four names, according to Bloomberg.

Potential nominees include Dina Powell, a partner at Goldman Sachs; Kelly Craft and Richard Grenell, the current ambassadors to Canada and Germany, respectively; and John James, a former GOP Senate candidate from Michigan, sources told the news service.

The new list of candidates come after State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert withdrew her nomination for the post over the weekend. Nauert, who was reportedly favored by President Trump, was to replace former Ambassador Nikki Haley in the job. Her decision to withdraw followed reports that she once employed a nanny who wasn’t authorized to work in the U.S.

Both Powell and Craft are well-connected within the Trump administration. Powell previously served as Trump’s deputy national security adviser, while Craft is married to billionaire Joe Craft, a Republican fundraiser and coal executive.

James, who ran for a Michigan Senate seat but fell short in his attempt to unseat Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow, is also well-liked within administration's circles and has been considered for other jobs, according to Bloomberg.

Trump’s elder daughter Ivanka Trump is another name that has been floated as a potential candidate for the position. Sources told Bloomberg that she is still being considered as a backup candidate if no front-runner emerges.

Go with Ivanka. The closer we get to House of Cards the better. Oops, I forgot, this is not the Clinton admin.

Not for that reason but because he was in the military and knows the world, is knowledgeable, and would make a great spokesman.

John James would be awesome.

West Point. Veteran officer/Apache Pilot. Businessman. Patriot.

I’d love to see that confirmation hearing. Schumer would have to concede this one, for fear of the Dem’s getting their asses handed to them. What could any of them say to this guy?

Kind of agree with you, but that voting bloc votes for the Left, votes for the goodies they’re promised. And, IMHO, they look at guys like John James as Uncle Tom’s and traitors. Where James would do a world of good, again IMO, would be to get this job, and when not schooling and bitch slapping the tyrants at the UN, do some speeches at college campuses and let those future socialists hear it from him.

I think he’d be a perfect pick.

I’d go a different direction with the Radical Islam. Many of the ME rulers, from 40-50 years ago, knew of the radical ideology and kept it in check. They were probably pretty brutal in their methods, but then again, that is the only thing radical islam knows, brutality. Think what you want of Hussein or Assad, they kept the radicals in check. If that meant getting shot in the head and left to rot, so be it.

The Shah of Iran kept all the crazies in prison, until he was forced out by Carter and look what happened there. Same thing for Ghaddafi. Yes, I know he played a part in the PanAm bombing over Lockerbie. But, within his borders, he kept the radicals confined to one place, Benghazi, and kept them in check. While the rest of the country enjoyed a fairly decent standard of living, unlike now, with obama/clinton intervention.

Yes the oil money plays a part, as it affords guys like bin laden to self fund his evil. It allowed ISIS to do their thing, but they’re about done thanks to the President.

One of the things that is changing things in the Middle East, I type this sitting somewhere in Iraq, is the internet. While there are still plenty of young muslims that see some sort of glory or heroism, in hoisting an ISIS flag, etc, but there are millions that are watching Youtube and Pornhub, that want no part of that. How do I know that? I see it, firsthand, every day.

Dina Powell? An anti-Trump, liberal Manhattan Goldman Sachs Democrat who never should have been in his admin to start with!

Another grotesque Javanka crony.

And Ivanka as a “back up”?

Please, Mr. President, please stop trying to make your daughter into a political icon and future political player in her own right—just send her and her corrupt husband back to NYC!

Really James would have only one qualification to be considered as UN ambassador, and that is the color of his skin. So we should stop with that nonsense.

If he wants to build his foreign affairs portfolio for a future run for office, we can find a good position for him for that. But UN ambassador would just be too far out of anything he has any excuses of a qualification for.

Grenell would be good for it.

Dina Powell shouldn’t be anywhere any Republican administration—and certainly in not Trump’s.

Ivanka and Jared need to go back to NYC.

Oh, and Kelly Craft is just a big donor who bought the ambassadorship to Canada. She and her husband had been Bush and then Rubio donors before backing Trump to get that.

It would be very unfortunate to see the UN position used to reward a donor.

You are speaking for yourself there buddy. Not me. It has become obvious to me from interaction with you that we do not think alike and I like the way I think about things.

Read John James biography. Add to that he ran a good, clean campaign for US Senator. Putting him in that position as opposed to someone who has drunk the swamp water would be awesome. We can’t really trust anyone else on that list.

Probably hundreds of thousands of Americans are qualified and would do a great job. The question I have is what kind of message do we want the appointment to send to the rest of the world. Granted that homosexuality is accepted by many Americans, perhaps a significant majority, but it is also viewed as immoral and disgusting by many, many Americans. So is a openly gay man with a long-term male partner the type of person that we collectively want to put forward as our ambassador to the world (the UN)? The Russians push the message that the Western Europeans and Americans are post-Christian. The Muslims say that we are secularized and decadent. The Chinese afford little to no legal protection for gays. Now I am not saying that any of these groups / countries should have veto power over the selection of our UN Ambassador. But I am saying that this position plays a meaningful role in our messaging so that thought should be given to what we (in this case our great President) want that message to be.

A false either/or positioning. The dude’s only experience is one losing political campaign? He’s in his 30s and is only under consideration because of his color. We shouldn’t stoop to that.

Give him a legit position for his background and let him build from that.

Certainly hundreds of thousands are more qualified than James.

But Grinnell? No, he’s long experience at the UN and now as an ambassador to a very important country. He would be great.

And yes, Trump should have open gays in his admin. We are a country of all Americans. Not just those who please the bigots, foreign or domestic, that you are so concerned about.

Completely agree that dislodging dictators in M-E was the biggest blunder in American foreign policy, even bigger than starting a war in Vietnam, if that was possible. It shows me that people in charge of foreign policy are simply academics and do not understand mindset of Muslims in middle-east. Since I grew up in a predominantly Muslim neighborhood in India close to Pakistan’s border, I was tearing my hair out when Bush-43 invaded Iraq to dis-lodge Saddam.

The chess players in Kremlin must have laughed their heads off when they saw that Americans were going to fight a war with guerilla style Viet-Cong fighters in rice paddies, with a 7000 miles long supply line distance, and direct the battles from Wasington, DC and not bomb supply lines in North Vietnam!

Did we do good with “experienced” foreign policy experts in starting the Iraq war? The answer is emphatically NO! May be a fresh thinker with actual military experience would be better.
