Not so unlikely. Within the decades of events related to the rise of and war with the Taliban is a contest between Pakistani interests and Iran over influence in Afghanistan. Yes, Pashtun-Pakistani interests have seemed to have the upper hand in that, and the reports of Iran-supported interests in Afghanistan have been fewer, but that does not mean the contest has ever ended.
Iran has had trouble in its part of Baluchistan for decades.
Not a highly visible conflict, usually, but good for a number of casualties every year.
And of course the problem comes from the Paki part of Baluchistan, where else? The Paki Baluchs are also a problem for the Pakis. Another not too well known problem.
All these countries are collections of ethnic and religious groups that harass each other constantly.
The IRGC does not possess sufficent organic armor or artillery for proper combined arms attacks (they leave that to the regular Iranian military, who are not used much outside Iran).
But when they are defending, they can dig in, pepper urban terrain with IEDs, and use that terrain to their advantage, requiring the attacker (us) to pry them out and use our own air and artillery to dig them out.
