Cuomo slams Ocasio-Cortez, others, as Amazon ditches New York

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo lambasted politicians such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others over Amazon's decision to leave New York City. Opponents of the deal with the tech giant had "put their own narrow political interests above their community," he said.

"[A] small group [of] politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community -- which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported bringing Amazon to Long Island City -- the state's economic future and the best interests of the people of this state," Cuomo said in the statement, which did not mention Ocasio-Cortez or other lawmakers by name. "The New York State Senate has done tremendous damage. They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity."

In the statement issued by his office, Gov. Cuomo mentioned that Amazon chose the Empire State because it is "the capital of the world and the best place to do business," adding that missing out on Amazon is a lost opportunity to diversify "our economy away from real estate and Wall Street."

Cuomo also said New York lost out on an opportunity to further cement its status "as an emerging center for tech and was an extraordinary economic win not just for Queens and New York City, but for the entire region, from Long Island to Albany's nanotech center."

The Triumph of Socialism!!

All they need to do is issue a decree increasing the minimum wage to $50, and all will be great.

AOC represents New York’s 14th Congressional district. Amazon was going to move into Long Island City — in the neighboring 12th Congressional district. I wonder what Rep. Carolyn Maloney has to say about all this. LOL.

Well, this is a difficult scenario. If it was up to me, I’ll tell Amazon “no”. I do not work in tech industry and I would not want to suffer from loss of purchasing power due to my income not keeping up with the increased cost of living. And I do not work in the tech industry.

Oh please. If you have to pay a company to locate in your state, you are doing something wrong. What about the businesses that have been burdened by high taxes, regulations, union - for decades? No, they drive old business out, then bribe new business to come in. It’s a terrible economic policy.
*********
Exactly. As my comment noted, the thing they are doing wrong is their socialist-induced high cost of doing business.

Cuomo is right, but I enjoy seeing him have a bad time.

LOL. Same here. And I live in the region where Amazon would've opened their HQ-2 ...

The irony is that several years ago Cuomo and his ilk were at war with Amazon to collect 'sales-tax' from any NYS resident who bought from Amazon, even though Amazon didn't have any physical presence in the state at the time.
Fast forwards to now, and suddenly Amazon is such an asset that NYS offers a 3-billion tax offset !!!

I'm no accountancy wizard, but even I notice that taxing the sales of Amazon while giving a 3-billion tax break sort of amounts to 'kickback' territory. Am I wrong on this?

You got that right. Not just driving old business out, but all the existing businesses and taxpayers would shoulder the burden to subsidize one new business. There might be an occasion where the larger interests are served to cut such a deal, but imo not in NYC and not with Amazon which is one of the top most valuable companies in the world AND is responsible for the decay that is continuing throughout much of city and states' retail businesses.

NYC is a mecca, it has plenty of reasons to attract all kinds of new businesses. It has an enormous population to serve, an enormous labor pool to draw from, all kinds of money and international exchange... If it can't attract businesses then it has its own policies to blame. The only reason to kowtow to Amazon is fear, or graft.

I sincerely apologize if I misunderstood the tone of your post. Socialism, in any form is anathema to the excercize of free market economics. It never works, in any form, in any scale, in any setting.

I grew up in New York.

The state is dying. It has no economic future.
