I remember election year 1992 and the field of Democrats running against GHW Bush weren’t so hot. Bush was coming off a popular victory in the Gulf War. The No New Taxes pledge did not do Bush in until Bill Clinton got the nomination and made it the centerpiece if this opposition to Bush. Rush Limbaugh was laughing during their convention saying how the purple Koolaid, a reference to Jim Jones, was being handed out. And I think we remember how that election turned out.
Clinton won because Ross Perot took most of the Republican votes away.
