According to Coonman’s father the Honorable Wescott Brownlee Northam, James was the father of his grandfather Levi Jacob Northam, who is also listed on the 1860 census with a few slaves of his own. ;-)

and the other Northams? The Northams of Accomack County are indeed, all very closely related. Except nowadays, of course, the black Northams who were the “indentured servants”, later freed from their “indentured” service to the Northam family because of the Civil War against Virginia, were not likely blood related, but DNA tests might tell a different story.
