Snohomish County declares state of emergency ahead of weekend snow

After recovering from an icy blow last weekend, another round of snow is expected to strike Washington over Friday and Saturday. Ahead of the weekend snow, Snohomish County declared a State of Emergency, effective Friday, Feb. 8 at 8 a.m.

“The safety of our residents is always our highest priority,” said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers in a news release. “We’d much rather be prepared and not have a major event than the alternative. The storms headed this way have the potential to create terrible road conditions and power outages. I’d ask our neighbors to prepare now and make sure they have enough supplies to last for the duration of the storms.”

County officials advise residents to get grocery shopping done ahead of time, top off gas tanks, protect pets from the cold, and check on elderly neighbors with special needs.

Snohomish County Road Maintenance crews will be fully staffed around the clock when the snow arrives, working 12-hour shifts plowing roads and salting roads. Up to 40 plows are scheduled to be working on unincorporated roads at any given time.

“It’s a good idea to plan to stay home,” Snohomish County Emergency Management Director Jason Biermann said. “The snow is likely to stick around. Give yourself a break from dangerous conditions.”

Additionally, schools throughout the Puget Sound area have already called for early school dismissals on Friday of up to three hours.

They didn't bother covering the best news... Michele Obama was suppose to be at the Tacoma Dome today promoting her new book, but she cancelled because of the threat of snow.

The "snow" coverage has been hilarious on local TV causing a run on grocery stores. Snohomish County declared an emergency even before the first flakes fell. Dozens of bus routes were cancelled before the first flakes started falling.

The poor reporters are trying to make it look like there is wind and snow, working with the stuff that hasn't melted yet from last weeks. It reminds me of the fake hurricane coverage we have seen in the past. So far the big storm is late coming to the party.

Roof collapse? Have they restricted 2nd amendment (yeah, I know WA) rights during the “emergency”.

They were caught by surprise a week ago when a snowstorm hit the PNW. You can bet that this time around, with all their reporters in the field, the storm will be a dud.

Snowmageddon 2019!!!! Global Climate Change wreaks havoc on the PNW. Women and minorities hit hardest. Democrats call for Billionaire Tax to stop the snow.

I am a little surprised that they haven’t. In other big news... they are charging a drunken teenage boy with a felt pen with felony hate crime charges for writing racially and sexually insensitive messages on name tags of other students at a dormitory. Fortunately, the name tags were made out of paper and able to be replaced and other objects were able to be cleaned off with some 409 cleaner.

That is what it reminded me of when this poor black woman reporter was trying to say even though there was no snow that the wind was already starting to kick up. She was standing outside without a hat and her hair and the bushes were not moving.

NOAA forecast for the next three days shows 4-8 inches.

They’re all gonna die.

The Thanksgiving storm of 1985 dropped 17 inches in Bremerton.

Temps dropped to 9deg F.

It was adventurous.

The Puget Sound is hilly everywhere.

The Thanksgiving storm of 1985 dropped 17 inches in Bremerton.

The bigger adventure for us was when we had the big ice storm and our power was out for two weeks. It was long enough ago that we were the only ones in the neighborhood who had a generator. It was around Christmas.

We live at the top of a tree covered steep little hill where the road goes up to the South. It is always in the shade during the winter so the ice hasn’t melted off it from last week. I thought that I was going to get away without putting on my studded snow tires, but even the AWD doesn’t get us up that hill without a major effort. Last year it took me 5 tries with ever increasing speed.

Might have been the same Christmas we lost power for a week.
All the houses in the neighborhood were blackout except us, We had a generator and all the Christmas tree lights lit up.

A year later their was another blackout and I could hear generators all over the neighborhood.

This is Winter Story Maya, for anyone who’s wondering.

And with a name like “Snohomish”, that county deserves it!

"You can bet that this time around, with all their reporters in the field, the storm will be a dud."

That's happened several times over the years - when they predict a big snow, it often turns out to be little or none. Then, when no one has predicted it, we'll have five or six inches. I live just south of Snohomish County, and haven't seen one flake yet.

All the houses in the neighborhood were blackout except us, We had a generator and all the Christmas tree lights lit up.

We left our Christmas lights lit as well. Normal generators use almost the same amount of fuel at 25% capacity as they do at 50%. We typically lose power here several times a year and all of our neighbors have generators as well.

I have metered the heck out of the generator and made spreadsheets with the load and the fuel consumption data. I almost felt sorry for my expert at everything neighbor. We have been using the same Briggs and Stratton 5000 watt generator for nearly 30 years. I converted it to natural gas with a venturi assembly I printed out of nylon and bolted to the front of the carburetor. I just hooked it up to the Tee I put at the meter for the BBQ many years ago.

Their house is smaller than ours but he calculated that he needed this mammoth generator in an enclosure that cost over a dozen times what ours did, then he had to pay Puget Sound Energy thousands more dollars to come out and put in a bigger line and new meter to his house. He was whining about how much it costs him every time it starts up automatically when the power goes out. So to top it off his new generator uses three times the gas that ours does even when it is not under load.

I have a similar set-up. The Briggs engine is so loud I run it just to remind the neighbors I have it!

Can’t they just go out into Peugeot Sound and get some electric eels and plug them in?

Oh.....that’s right.....eels are DC.

I still have Q13 on in the background for comic relief. They have said that they have reports of snow where we are, but I have not seen any. I am sure that we will get a couple inches of snow tonight, but it is funny when they go overboard. Last week the snow wasn’t predicted but my wife said that it looked and felt like snow and it turns out her predictive abilities are better than theirs.

I was looking into putting a better muffler on it. I duct taped together a 3 sided with roof cover made out of 2 inch thick Styrofoam that I turn around when we use it so the opening is facing out... It muffles the sound in the house quite a bit. Our neighbors are far enough away that it doesn't bother them and all of them have their own generators as well.

Ours is starting to get harder to start. I make sure that I have a can of starter fluid ready to go.
