The Chinese counter-intelligence threat is more deep, more diverse, more vexing, more challenging, more comprehensive and more concerning than any counterintelligence threat that I can think of," FBI Director Christopher Wray testified at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing last week.
And now, lawmakers are also focused on new allegations of China's attempts to influence American academia and public opinion.
A report from the director of National Intelligence is blunt: "China's intelligence services will exploit the openness of American society, especially academia and the scientific community..."
"It is widespread and it is dangerous and this is legislation designed to stop that," Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz told Fox News about a bill he has re-introduced, The Stop Higher Education Espionage and Theft Act.
Its goal is to deter what he calls the "infiltration" by China of our country's universities, colleges and research institutions.
"Too many universities, I think, are gullible, are not realizing the magnitude of this threat," Cruz warned.
"This is a concerted, organized, systematic threat to undermine our universities and undermine our economy and we need to be serious to combat it."
Several current and former Chinese students have been convicted in U.S. courts for espionage.

Of course they are. Only a dimwit would think otherwise given their history.
Yes, but they’ve apparently stepped up their efforts several notches.
Better watch out for that poon tang being thrown about,we all know that’s taken plenty of good guys down for thinking with the wrong head.
While congress is in hysterics over alleged Russian involvement with elections, the Chinese are infiltrating universities. Ideologically and intellectually, our universities are soft targets. Students are being indoctrinated into believing that the NRA and conservatives are their real enemies.
Every chinese exchange student in our colleges and universities has a second job of collecting whatever intel they can.
How many of those students are in STEM and get lab assist jobs in research on campus?
Solution. No visas for Chinese nationals looking to take STEM courses in the US. All the visas they want to take gender studies , black studies and queer studies, the tuition to be paid for by their Chinese masters in government looking to burn money
8 years of that vomit.
Actually I think is primarily to steal technology!
US taxpayer funded R/D grants, unclassified R/D contracts produce technology at (using DOD terminology) TRL -Technical Readiness Level 1 or 2. Usually TRL1 because the “coin-of-the-realm” to advance an academic career is do R/D to graduate students & produce papers. 99/100 the TRL1 technology languishes with the university tech transfer office awaiting some smart US company to come and pick up the license & pay royalties to the university. Some universities are good at marketing these assets most or not.
It doesn’t matter to the Chinese national professor or student what the university does because the “knowledge & expertise” is exported to the homeland! The PRC is not going to pay any silly license fees if it can get away with it. 999/1000 times they do! Also Chinese (and all South Asian profs) prefer to admit Asian grad students, usually their own nationals! (Real discrimination here! Remember only whites have to pay attention to antidiscrimination laws!) And if they get to be Chairs or Deans guess who they hire. Remember in Asia & the 3rd World its not viewed cronyism or nepotism ! In fact its considered to be quite moral. You get a break with a great job/opportunity, you’re expected to bring over family, clan, tribe or nationality! To do otherwise is to betray your own!
Also it doesn’t help that many American students don’t go to graduate school! (A lot of reasons: lack of interest, & student debt seems to be the biggest reasons!) We’re just vacating the playing field and allowing the US taxpayer to underwrite a lot of PRC (and others!) research.
When I went to China, with other professors in 2017, my IT department was emphatic that I only take a loaner computer with just the information necessary for the trip. They said that when we entered the country, the ChiComs sucked all the information out of the professor’s computers. The other (leftist) professors were oblivious and made no security efforts at all. There is no access to Google, Facebook and other online services in China. The Chinese use MySpace to connect with each other.
What’s on my computer of interest to the ChiComs? Art history PowerPoints...surely of monumental interest.
About 3 decades ago, we had younger relatives and children of friends reporting us about the ChiCom students in the UC system, engineering State Universities, Berkeley, UCLA and Stanford.
American born Asians were still being turned away as usual.
china ping
“How many of those students are in STEM and get lab assist jobs in research on campus?”
Probably, most if not all.
Others are in the schools of economics, pre MBA and MBA/
A little late for this...half of the students in my math and computer classes were Chinese students in the 90s. Many of them openly admitted that they were government spies!
Liberals are just dim and unobservant people. I see and deal with them all the time here in New York City.
Chinaman spies at colleges? You forgot chauffeurs for Congressfools. And then their rocket program paid bribes to the Clintons to get Loral to help them miniaturize and MIRV their rockets.
Theyve been doing this since Bush #1, and went ape sht with Clinton, continued on till Trump. Our intel completely sucks if this is news to them now.
Day late and a dollar short. They have been doing this for decades now. Hell, they even got a President to give them technology.
