Virginia attorney general admits he wore blackface
The Hill ^ | 02/06/19 | Reid Wilson

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring (D) on Wednesday said he had worn blackface to a party while he was an undergraduate in college, deepening a political crisis that has now ensnared the three top officials in the Commonwealth’s government.

In a statement released Wednesday, minutes after Herring held an emergency meeting with the state legislative black caucus, the attorney general took responsibility for appearing in blackface.

“In 1980, when I was a 19-year old undergraduate in college, some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time, like Kurtis Blow, and perform a song,” Herring said in a statement.

“It sounds ridiculous even now writing it. But because of our ignorance and glib attitudes — and because we did not have an appreciation for the experiences and perspectives of others — we dressed up and put on wigs and brown makeup.”

Herring, who had already announced plans to run for governor in 2021, is the third statewide elected official in Virginia to find himself embroiled in a fast-moving storm. All three are now battling for survival at the risk of halting their party’s rapid ascension to power.

Gov. Ralph Northam (D) is facing calls to resign after a photo from Northam’s medical school yearbook emerged, showing a man in blackface standing next to a man in full Ku Klux Klan robe and hood.

At the same time, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D) — who would succeed Northam if the governor were to step down — pushed back against allegations that he had sexually assaulted a woman at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Herring and Fairfax were seen as rivals to succeed Northam in 2021, and Herring has called on Northam to resign.

Rumors of a photo showing Herring in blackface had circulated in Richmond political circles for days even as attention focused first on Northam, and then on Fairfax.

ETC..

It wasn't black face. It was brown face.

When we have finally expunged society of everyone who has uttered a denigrating word, what will be the excuse then for the underlying causes of the stereotypes to still be with us?

I think they all should have to moonwalk to prove they’re not racist.

My guess is that there’s no way Fairfax resigns, and no way the democrats force out a black man.

But Northam might argue that, since he is actually innocent of being in the picture, he won’t resign, and use as an excuse that he doesn’t want a governor with a sexual assault cloud.

Meanwhile, if they all were working together, instead of all trying to stab each other in the back, Fairfax or Herring would resign first, and then Northam would appoint a successor, and then he could resign and the appointed person could become governor.

I’m not sure why Virginia allows for the mere appointment without legislative approval of a person who can then be in the line of succession for governor.

But our government was built with the idea that the governor was a pretty weak position, and kept weaker because you can only serve one term at a time, and then have to wait to try again.

Indeed.

It comes down to "It's whitey's fault" or "It's nature".

And everybody is going to have to wind up taking a side.

In fairness, it was almost 40 years ago and 19-year-olds do stupid things — especially at parties.

If Northam had any character, which he doesn’t, he’d simply have said, I wore a costume to a costume party. Grow up.

All this retroactive McCarthyism accomplishes is to tell the little boy commenting on the Emperor’s lack of clothing to shut up.

“Some friends suggested”

Way to take responsibility.

Did they hold him down and paint his face?

Filthy Democrat bigot.

Basically this means there’s a photo out the somewhere that he knows exists and he wants to get out ahead of it before it is released.

I agree.

I don't like this tit-for-tat.

However, Democrats created this mess and they should at least called out in public.

One reason I dislike Republicans jumping on the lynching bandwagon is that it only strengthens and legitimizes the Democrats power to destroy people over trivial issues.

When my son got out of USMC, he and a couple of his buddies wore their USMC issue coveralls (Iraq, circa 2006-2007), and had appropriate props to go as “Ghostbusters” to a Halloween party.

There are photos out there.

Now looking back, it could be said that Ghostbusters are against ghosts, normally thought to be white in color (think, white sheet ghost costumes), so this whole Ghostbusters costume deal was probably very racist of them (anti-white). This would no doubt be highly offensive to some demographics, and/or some apologies or reparations are overdue.

I think we should demand an FBI investigation into the costume and/or role-playing background of every one in Congress, as well as the top 5 officials in each state.

(/s)… some of this stuff has gotten ridiculous.

So Herring called for the Governor to resign because of blackface, while the whole time (7 days) knowing HE HIMSELF had done the same.A reporter should but wont) ask him if he will take his own advice and resign. The #4 in the graphic is a REPUBLICAN ,Kirk Cox (one of my wife’s high school teachers) being next in line if the 3 Democrats ahead of him resign. Therefore IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.Under the rug the whole thing goes.
