They’ve been developing Pap smear computer diagnostics since the early 1980s, nearly 40 years. 71% after all that time isn’t too exciting.

It is nevertheless significant that an AI agent has demonstrated a high degree of proficiency in such a task. How long does it take for a human technician to become expert in reading Pap smear slides? How much are they paid?

Now, an AI is near to being able to do the job. Turn on the computer and it goes to work -- without ever being late in the morning, getting mopey about the behavior and defects of her husband, or wanting a raise or more time off.

Sooner than we expect, wide swaths of skilled human employment will be impacted, partly displaced by computer AIs and required to serve, collaborate with, and supervise computer AIs that make human-like judgment calls with consequences in the real world.
