It would be interesting to know Reza Aslan's political affiliations. There is a faction known as Mujahadeen Khalk, Marxists who were so opposed to the Iranian revolution that they jumped sides in the Iran-Iraq war, fighting for the Iraqis. That might begin to give some explanation for people or Muslim heritage who have sympathy for leftists, such as the Young Turks.
