True, but they pay full tuition. It’s actually a profit center for EPISD.

And, you know this, how?

I'm also having a hard time picturing tattooed, baggy-shorts clad cholos throwing their gang signs while jamming to Brahms.

“And, you know this, how?”

I was on the EPISD school board for over a decade.

Maybe in the 70’s - 90’s....but, how does EP/TX get away with charging Mexican nationals for tuition, while GIVING IT AWAY, for FREE, to those Mexicans here ILLEGALLY?

Also, what is ‘fair’ about allowing these paying non-citizens to utilize all of the programs/facilities that are paid for by EP/TX taxpayers? Who sets those rates? Who approved those applicants and accepted the tuition fees? The Board?

Just curios. Thanks.

“how does EP/TX get away with charging Mexican nationals for tuition, while GIVING IT AWAY, for FREE, to those Mexicans here ILLEGALLY?”

Well, it’s mandated by federal law. If a child resides (legally or illegally) in your district, you have to send them to school. EPISD didn’t write that law. It just follows it.

The kids who reside in Juarez (many of which kids are US citizens by birth whose parents live in Mexico, BTW) whose parents pay tuition do not reside in the district — so they pay tuition.

The tuition-paying kids are solidly middle or upper class (think doctor and lawyer kids) and some of the best students. They also tend to go to Cathedral (private RCC school, which I went to, along with El Paso High).

It’s a weird border thing. Back in the 1980s, you could be in downtown and cross back and forth to Juarez without intending to. (I think there might be a guard asleep in a booth.) The street signs would just change to “ALTO”.

Then cocaine happened.

Yes....I know that our govt (sadly) mandates free education, even for those ‘residing’ here, illegally.

What I am asking is....how can Mexican citizens be expected to pay a tuition for their USA public education, when the illegals are getting it for free?

And, who determines this tuition amount? Who are their checks made payable to?

I don’t care what ‘class’ they are....doctor/lawyer whatever....why are we educating these mexican citizens AND how are the tuition charges even justified, considering the above mentioned free education for their fence hopping/river crossing countrymen?

Yes...I have family in EP. I remember crossing over the border, for a fun day of shopping/dining, back in the 80’s. I don’t know anyone who dares to cross that border, today. I know folks do, just no one that I know.

The Dims/cartels/drugs/trafficking have ruined everything :(

Do you live near EP? It IS one of the safest cities in the USA...thanks to that wall :-)

“What I am asking is....how can Mexican citizens be expected to pay a tuition for their USA public education, when the illegals are getting it for free?”

Same as the kids from New Mexico or Van Horn who went to school there, I suppose. They’re “out of district”. And, unlike many, follow the rules. There are good people in Mexico, you know.

“And, who determines this tuition amount? Who are their checks made payable to?”

The checks were made payable to the EPISD and the rates were set (ultimately) by the school board, upon recommendation by various people who worked in the district. It was pretty stout, too — more than the cost per student overall. It helped with something like 10-15% of the budget for something like 2% of the total enrollment. We couldn’t have balanced the budget without it.

“I don’t care what ‘class’ they are....doctor/lawyer whatever....why are we educating these mexican citizens”

Well, we did it to be able to offset the unfair burden of the illegals who contributed nothing. And having smart kids in your schools helps the other kids. Iron sharpens iron.

“AND how are the tuition charges even justified, considering the above mentioned free education for their fence hopping/river crossing countrymen?”

Well, how are income taxes justified for those of us that work compared to welfare queens? Honest, good, people always shoulder the load. That’s called life. No one promised fairness.

“Do you live near EP?”
