Curt Schilling snubbed by Baseball Hall of Fame; Trump Tweets His Support
American Thinker ^ | 01/23/2019 | William O'Toole

“Curt Schilling deserves to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame,” President Trump tweeted Sunday evening. “Great record, especially when under pressure and when it mattered most. Do what everyone in Baseball knows is right!”

Curt Shilling didn’t get into Cooperstown this year but maybe next year or someday. Perhaps his improved voting numbers are due to the Trump effect. Or his support for Trump has made him persona non grata in baseball circles.

He wasn’t selected but, Mariano Rivera, the greatest reliever in history, was on the ballot for the first time and received 100% of the writers’ votes, a first in Cooperstown history. Not even Babe Ruth, Willie Mays or Mickey Mantle were checked on every ballot.

Schilling wasn’t selected but Roy Halliday, a pitcher who won over 200 games, had a winning percentage of .659, spun a playoff no-hitter and perfect game, and was awarded two Cy Youngs for best pitcher in baseball, was also elected in his first year on the ballot.  His was awarded posthumously as he was killed in a plane crash in November, 2017. Perhaps this tragedy weighed on minds of the voters.  Maybe, they thought it would be a classy move (and it was) to select Halliday to make the lives of his wife and his two boys a little more bearable, and a little more understandable.

Shilling didn’t make it but Edgar Martinez, one of the best designated hitters in MLB history, was also given the thumbs up for entrance into the Hall.

Even Mike Mussina, whose stats come closest to Shilling’s, finally made it.

To be fair, Shilling’s percentage increased by nine percentage points which could bode well maybe not next year but the following.

Baseball has hit bottom. With the Dbacks now the league’s Number One crap team, I don’t have a team to root for anymore. Hockey is all I have left to keep me going. EVERYTHING else is a joke. IMHO.

Relievers and designated hitters have no business being in the hall of fame.

Baseball writers, all you need to know. Left wing a-holes just 95% of the rest of media. Merit is meaningless.

Curt Schilling DEFINITIVELY deserves to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, for the “bloody-sock win” if for nothing else!!!!

But he’s been blocked for purely political reasons!! PHOOEY!!!!

Have some respect, do your homework, and spell people's names correctly.

His name was Roy Halladay.

I could see both arguments. The argument against the DH is much stronger. Relievers are getting in because the role of the starting pitcher has slowly diminished. That’s why a 300-win pitcher might be a thing of the past.

one of the best designated hitters

A Hall of Fame entry for a non-pitcher who can only play half the game at a "position" that shouldn't exist? Jeez, maybe Manny Mota should be in the Hall of Fame.

Schilling was an excellent pitcher, but I don’t think he was quite at the HOF level for a starter. He never won a Cy Young Award and was never really considered one of the top 2-3 pitchers in the league.

Ummm, three times he came in 2nd in Cy Young Award voting.... That would seem to place him in the top two.

I’m thinking across both the AL and NL.

"...Mike Mussina, whose stats come closest to Shilling’s..."

His REGULAR SEASON stats - but do a quick post-season stat compare and the difference is enormous.
Curt is one of the best clutch pitchers to ever lace up a pair of cleats. But he's conservative, and most sports writers come out of leftist journalism schools - so there's that....

[Schilling] never won a Cy Young Award....

The case against him is that he was only a top pitcher for a few of his 20 years.

The case for him is a great record in later years and went 11-2 in the post-season with 2.23 ERA. Those post-season stats are HOF.

The newer methods of stat evaluation are very favorable for Schilling.

Sorry, the HOF is a farce. So many great players kept out, while many who didn’t measure up are accepted. Time to take away the jock sniffing writers voting based on their like or dislike of the players.
