Trump defends immigration proposal against 'amnesty' criticism from conservatives
The Hill ^ | January 20, 2019 | Brett Samuels

In a series of tweets, Trump chastised Democrats for dismissing his plan, and attempted to assuage immigration hard-liners who likened the administration's latest proposal to amnesty for immigrants already in the country illegally.

"No, Amnesty is not a part of my offer," Trump tweeted. "It is a 3 year extension of DACA. Amnesty will be used only on a much bigger deal, whether on immigration or something else. Likewise there will be no big push to remove the 11,000,000 plus people who are here illegally-but be careful Nancy!"

Dumbasses around here apparently didn’t read that the USSC boxed Trump in this week by failing to schedule the DACA appeal for this term.

He’s playing the cards he has.

Trump is playing iffy. I am an early and current supporter of the prez.

But if he wants to save the country all current illegals , including the DACA contingent have to go and stand in line.

And a “wall” must occur. And we have to fix asylum law and anchor baby Law.

Big job, but crucial

I know you all here think Trump the greatest negotiator in history, but IMHO a great negotiator always takes into account what he would do if the opposition accepted some provision which is deemed 99% unlikely.

Like DACA. If that had happened, this country would be gone.

Trump is gambling with the country playing odds with DACA.

The people whining about a million DACA brought here illegally but now registered are ignoring the million that come in legally every year who have less value to the country. Even using the 11,000,000 numbner, the DACA do not matter. The vendetta to deport DACA is misguided and vindictive.

The correct approach is what Trump is doing: use DACA amnesty as a bargaining chip for more wall and immigration reform in the future. Extending work permits for 3 years is not amnesty. We can absorb a million registered DACA easily. We cannot absorb a million like them a year, plus 11,000,000 or double or triple here without any sort of registration.

Trump has always emphasized LEGAL immigration -- and deporting CRIMINAL Illegals.

The "gray area" with Trump has always been with is those who are here illegally, but are not violent criminals....

Ideally all illegals are deported. Trump's remained unclear on that and probably will allow them to stay lawfully, if he gets the wall to block Terrorists, drug dealers, etc.

I can assume there also won’t be a big push to collect my taxes is I decide to ignore that law, right?

It’s amazing to see how some people in here panic and start pearl clutching and hand wringing before anything is even settled...President Trump knows what he’s doing...

Almost everything he’s done or said since January 20th, 2017 has worked out for the country’s benefit...

all current illegals , including the DACA contingent have to go and stand in line.

Practically speaking, it is much easier to allow DACA three years of work permits while negotiating their status,. The alternative given to me yesterday was Elion Gonzalez style deportation. That took a dozen heavily armed federal agents. Are we going to do that for a miillion DACA? No, the effort is better spent on illegal illegals and prosecuting employers etc. That will reduce the largest numbers, in the millions by self-deportation (there has been a lot of that already).

Then we also need to reform the legal immigration system. That currently allows a million mostly unqualified immigrants every year. A million is the same number as the DACA.

$22 Trillion in debt already.

There is no money to hire enough gov’t workers to locate 30 million illegals, arrest them and pay for their airfare.

Heck the gov’t can’t even find the 10 most wanted on FBI’s list.

A better solution is e-verify for new job applicants and existing workers and fine the employers. You will be shocked how quickly the illegals will self-deport.

Cut out welfare for illegals and they will self-deport quickly. Those who are working in productive jobs, can stay on work visa’s, like they do in Singapore which has more millionaires based on population than any other country on earth.

I didn’t realize a vote for Trump meant getting the Manhattanite Democrat New York Times-reading Ivanka Trump and Democrat Jared Kushner into the Oval Office. It looks like they are still calling the shots for daddy. The daughter in particular reportedly has a very soft spot for illegals.

Freakin RINOs, all this crap could have been solved in the past 2 years and we would have kept the house as well from the Illegal immigration party. When the hell are people going to STOP electing and reelecting Democrat operatives? Why the hell was McCain reelected so many times?

Reagan was criticized by "conservatives" over the 1986 Reykjavík Summit, saying he'd yielded too much to gain too little. In reality, Reagan's steadfast defense of preserving SDI (which the Soviets feared) proved to be a critical long-run success in this "failure."

I believe The Wall is developing in to Trump's SDI, his "no new taxes." This cornerstone of his campaign promise on illegal immigration seems to be his Last Stand. Similar to nuclear arms reductions (which Reagan's own people decried) and SDI (which made Reagan a laughingstock with those in and outside of his circle), I get that Trump will have to break some eggs to make an omelette.

Pushed between a Wall and deportations, I'll take the Wall.

I agree 100%. E-Verify is ready now and should be part of any solution.

DACA is tied up in the Supreme Court until Summer 2020. The Supremes decided last week not to take up the case this year. So offering a 3 year extention is really only 18 months more than it otherwise would have been, IF WE WIN THE CASE which is very questionable. Lefty Roberts will make sure to not deport these kids. You can bet on it.

The people saying this is amnesty are trolls. There’s no pathway to citizenship. It’s basically 3 years of the status quo.

Regardless, it’s a non-starter with democrats. This charade will go on another week or two with Trump making proposals to Democrats to seem reasonable to moderates and independents and will continually get shot down. Then he will declare a national emergency and the shut down will end.

The wall will be tied up in court for 2 years and the 2020 Election will decide its fate.

Everything is all PR right now so getting excited about proposals that are going nowhere is silly. Nothing is going to happen because Nancy is not interested in fixing DACA. She likes the issue in 2020 of Trump deporting these kids. It plays well with suburban women and hurts Trump.
