President Trump, in a televised White House address Saturday, offered Democrats a compromise package on immigration in an effort to end the nearly monthlong partial government shutdown -- although Democrats dismissed the olive branch as a "non-starter" before Trump even spoke.
Trump announced that he was prepared to back a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 immigrants who came to the country illegally as children and were shielded from deportation under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, in exchange for the $5.7 billion he has requested for a barrier on the southern border.
"Walls are not immoral," he said, adding that a wall "will save many lives and stop drugs from pouring into our country."
The deal would also extend protections for 300,000 recipients of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program -- which protects immigrants from designated countries with conditions that prevent nationals from returning safely.
"Our immigration system should be a source of pride, not a source of shame," Trump said, urging politicians to "take off their armor" and find solutions.
It would also offer $800 million for drug detection technology to secure ports of entry, 2,750 new border agents and law enforcement professionals, and 75 new immigration judges to reduce the backlog of asylum requests. He said that all his measures have been supported by Democrats before.
He spent much of the address talking about the dangers that an open border presented, describing a "very wide and open gateway for criminals and gang members to enter the United States." However, he also teased the possibility of future, broader immigration reform if his proposals were accepted by Congress.

No Deal!!! Fund the ENTIRE wall for any DACA permits. Include eVerify!!! Change law to immediately deporting of anyone entering or staying in the US illegally.

I think you are right. I didn’t get to see the speech but I read the highlights on Daily Caller. My first thought was “this is a fairly reasonable deal”, and then I read that Pelosi immediately rejected it.
Moderates and independents are going to start giving Pelosi the side eye because of this. It will be clear to anyone with a reasonable mind that she is being obstinate for the sake of being obstinate and that it is personal (about her) and not about America.

i know some folks who worked at the local irs office and they are complaining bitterly that they are currently “unemployed.”
however, it seems to me that all they have to do is dip into their savings for a while and wait it out until the shutdown ends and they will in effect get a free vacation.
perhaps when they complain what they are really complaining about is the prospect of a RIF?!
(btw they claimed no responsibility for the tea party harrassment by the irs, saying it would never be allowed in the local office.)

When you get right down to it, that description probably fits half the democrats in Congress except for the illiterate part and given the fact that their aides read everything and then explain it to them and tell them how to vote on a given bill the literate part doesn't count for much among democrats.
The illegal alien part, according to Mad Maxine, is reserved for the next USSC Justice. (Just as a token, no sense in cutting them in on the main stream of Congressional corruption)

They will never help America. If its good for us they hate it. If you don’t start mass deportations they have no reason to compromise. As soon as they see bus truck train and plane loads of their future voters being forcibly removed from this country they will finally trade for a wall.
I think you are right. When the Dems refused to save DACA before..........those illegals showed up at the Capitol to give the Dems (and Pelosi) a piece of their minds. If they refuse to fight for Dreamers AGAIN, just to deny Trump border security, I expect it to blow up in their nasty liberal faces.
Trump is also winning over many in the Hispanic community because he's talking truth about our problems with illegal alien CRIMINALS...........our broken immigration laws and the horrific things people, many that they know, experienced when using coyotes/cartels to sneak into the States.
Add in the continued public appearances of parents/family who have lost loved ones to illegal alien criminals.........the continuing Caravan invasions and Americans who have been touched negatively by the drugs pouring across our borders.....and I expect to see even a bigger shift in numbers, towards Trumps border security plans.
You're right of course, and I am as certain of this as I am that President Trump will get his wall/fence/whatever it ends up being called ... though in doing so he may save the Democrat/Left from their dilemma with their crazy-as-all-get-out base (an outcome I think Pelosi and Schumer secretly hope for).
