BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith said Friday that he stands by the outlet's reporting following a rare statement from special counsel Robert Mueller's office disputing its report about allegations against Michael Cohen, President Trump's former lawyer.
"We stand by our reporting and the sources who informed it, and we urge the Special Counsel to make clear what he's disputing," Smith said in a statement.
BuzzFeed reported Thursday that Trump instructed Cohen to lie to Congress about the timing of negotiations over a potential Trump Tower in Moscow.
The story cited two federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter.
Mueller's office rarely comments on stories related to the special counsel's investigation into potential collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.
“BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate,” special counsel spokesman Peter Carr said in a statement obtained by The Hill on Friday night.

Three reporters said, the Special Counsel’s office would not confirm, but weren’t steering us off the story.
That was being reported on loop, Congress and Media were calling for Impeachment, and Cohen was said to be backing out of his appearance before Congress.
A Leak Investigation was being teed up and Mueller has to face a Leak Investigation while Whitaker is still in charge, or move to correct his Spokesman encouraging the Reporting.
This is Mueller moving to avoid a direct hit on his Get Trump Op.
