I guess the congregation wasn't properly armed.

There is a church school on the property. In some states just that means that you can not be armed.

Not sure if this is the case in Texas.

Also the best armed group can be shot from ambush.

Could be the folks attending meetings were not armed, as they may be during Sunday services.
