A colossal storm is poised to barrel across the northern Sierra Nevada Wednesday evening, with high winds whipping heavy falling snow and creating blizzard conditions.
The National Weather Service advised against all travel in the mountain range straddling California and Nevada through Thursday.
"I would call this storm extremely dangerous," said Karleisa Rogacheski, a meteorologist with the NWS Sacramento office. "During whiteout conditions, it's going to be near-impossible to drive."
The NWS has issued a winter storm warning for elevations between 5,500 feet and 6,500 and a blizzard warning for elevations above 7,o00 feet, where conditions will be "potentially life-threatening" with "zero visibility in whiteout conditions."

They were between the storms. A blizzard warning went up yesterday afternoon for following counties: Sierra, Nevada, Placer, El Dorada in Calif & Washoe in Nevada until Fri afternoon.
I-80 CLOSED.
The climate deniers refuse to understand the cold and snow are being brought on by global warming.
Bring patience. I-80 is closed off & on.
I’ve been in blizzards in both the Sierra Nevada and Lake Superior. Both are challenges.
The snow in the Sierra is slick as snot and near impossible to transverse.
OTOH, Lake Superior blizzards create impenetrable whiteouts, and you can’t see where you’re going.
Either one can kill you if you’re not prepared.
I have to admit that when I saw “Sierra Nevada” in the headline, I thought this was about the brewery.
Im planning on taking California #88 over Carson Pass on 1/25. How long to clear that much snow?
“What is the newly elected adulterer going to do with all that water?”
Let it all flow into the ocean, just like his predecessor.
Not to worry, they have plenty of food.

I usually goes south on Kansas #7, turn West on I70 and head for Denver. The Highway patrol usually closes the Interstate at Hayes.
Gee, that must be the storm we’re catching the tail end of with only 2 feet of snow and 15 mph winds.

It is winter, no?
Here in the SF Bay Area it hasn’t quite lived up to expectations yet.
I heard Donner’s pass is great in the winter.
“I heard Donners pass is great in the winter.”

Yep,a great shortcut.

I saw an interesting documentary on the Donner Party that made the point that the cannibalism didnt do any good because the victims were so emaciated, that is non nutritious, that little was gained by eating them. I live here in the foothills of the Sierra and always joke to friends that the lesson is that if youre car breaks down over the mountains you should have at your passengers right away

LOL-—Remind me never to get in a car with you.:-)

Do they plan to hold another annual Donner Party?
