The map, other than the fact that it reverses the traditional Anglo/American color scheme, 36 years before the 2000 election, is much in point. It shows the Republican Conservative carrying the Thurmond vote, as his base. It also shows the Goldwater strength over lay the Wallace strength in 1968. (Wallace became a continental figure in 1964, but held back his third party effort so as not to draw votes that Goldwater needed.) Bill Rusher understood the importance of the Wallace movement in setting the stage for a major Conservative turn (Reagan) in American politics.

Your point is further illustrated by the Thurmond party switch, followed by his consistent push in Republican Administrations for the appointment of Conservative Judges.

Republican Conservatives, who deny the importance of the Jeffersonian (Jefferson, Madison & Monroe's) contribution to the heritage for which we fight today, lack intellectual integrity, and in their failure hurt the cause which they claim to endorse. It is sad, and both morally and tactically, indefensible.
