Trump's shutdown gamble now hinges on a wall many Republicans were never truly sold on
NBC "News" ^ | January 14, 2019 | by Noah Rothman

For two years, the GOP had many opportunities to fund Trump’s wall both in part or in whole and it declined on every occasion.

On Friday, January 11, a dubious milestone was reached. We are now living through what has become the longest government shutdown in American history. This seemingly intractable stalemate has created the illusion of partisan consensus. Democrats seem united in opposition to President Donald Trump’s demand for a small amount of funding that would be used to construct portions of the president’s long-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Republicans, meanwhile, are posturing as though they have always supported Trump’s quest for the boundary. Neither is true.

In truth, though, it is the GOP that is showing more serious signs of cracking - and that’s to be expected. The Republican Party was never united in support of Donald Trump’s wall in the first place.

Less than a month after Trump took the oath of office, Republicans were already backing away from the prospect of a border wall - because of the price tag and lack of spending offsets, to which many Republican lawmakers objected, but also because there was disagreement over the essential utility of a physical partition.

For two years, Republicans had many opportunities to fund Trump’s wall both in part or in whole and they declined on every occasion. In failing to approve the wall, Congressional Republicans rendered a negative verdict on Trump’s signature policy proposal. The GOP was right to be skeptical of what a wall could accomplish. But they should not be allowed to pretend that they have always been steadfast supporters of this project now that a Democratic majority in the House provides them with political cover.

the whole wall thing wouldn't be necessary if two things have occurred....

one,Mexico would stop enabling these people....

and two, if people here illegally would not immediately be eligible for OUR tax money in the form of benefits and SS etc....if they were not able to take our jobs unless fully vetted and approved and perhaps some kind of a dna record so they would not be imitating several people for MORE benefits.

the fact that the USA just gives OUR money away to people undeserving is why we've become the dumping grounds...

the writer is mockingbird delusional.

How about a REAL vote whether the GOP should be decimated
for lying to voters, and obstructing VOTERS’ WISHES?

Bush League Republicans do not want a border fence any more than Democrats.

We would already have one.

Republican legislators? Sure. But GOP voters overwhelmingly want a wall.

“In truth, though, it is the GOP that is showing more serious signs of cracking - and that’s to be expected. The Republican Party was never united in support of DONALD TRUMP’S WALL in the first place.”

If Donald Trump wanted a wall, he’d build it and have it done in a month.

This is a wall for the UNITED STATES, but I guess NBC News hasn’t figured that out yet.

Then these RINOs had better convince their soulmates in the RAT party
to give Trump his wall and border security money.
It’s that simple.

These Republicans need only ask themselves one question...

Do I ever want to be elected to office again?

Binary question, binary answer.

Binary choice.

The question of the wall has so thoroughly divided the nation because it crystallizes multiple, related issues...even two different world views into a simple binary choice.

Yes. Or no.

It would help if they were not allowed to clog ours ERs for free medical care for non emergencies

Furthermore, their children are not allowed to lower the qualities of our schools until their children learn english through classes that they pay for out of their own pockets. Furthermore, I would like An audit of the amount of money sent south of the border versus their claimed income
