Oh, agreed (my wife is a teacher), but, are we talking 30+ per class in LA?

The standard class size when I was in elementary school was 30 students. That was the case at Pearl Harbor Elementary School (K-1), 1961, Hazel Goes Cook School (2nd, 4th) Chula Vista, CA, Adelaide Elementary School (3rd) Federal Way, WA, Taylor Elementary (5th) Norfolk, VA, West Springfield Elementary (5th) Springfield, VA, Rolling Valley Elementary (6th) Springfield, VA. There were no "teachers aids". Just one teacher in the classroom. We had books provided. Parents provided paper/pencil/erasers. School provided extras like "finger paint".

The class sizes can vary wildly due to scheduling needs. I’ve had years where one class period was 24 and the next was 38, and no one seemed able to do anything about it. But yes, L.A. ... Like this year, I have six classes (we’re on an 8 block schedule, which I hate) and my class sizes are between 27 and 36. It’s the science teachers who really get slammed, for some reason. Ours had over 40 in every class last year. It’s just nuts.
