John Howard saves woman from domestic violence incident in Wollstone (former Australian PM)

Former prime minister John Howard personally intervened to stop a domestic violence incident after stumbling across a couple fighting in the street.

Mr Howard, 79, was on his daily walk near his home in Wollstonecraft about 7.45am on Wednesday when he saw the clash.

It is understood a man was attempting to put something in a bin, triggering a row with a woman that allegedly escalated into physical violence.

A Liberal source said Mr Howard called out “Hey” in a bid to stop the fight, before standing with the woman until police arrived.

The former Liberal leader, who celebrates his 80th birthday in July, is understood to be assisting officers from North Shore Police Area Command with their inquiries and has provided them with a statement.

Officers said Mr Howard had assisted at the scene but was “not involved” in the fracas.

He is now being hailed as a hero after news of the incident did the rounds of the Liberal Party faithful.

“He took on the Taliban in his 60s and now he’s taking on domestic violence at almost 80,” a Liberal source said.

“He not only stopped the fight, but he stood with the woman until help arrived. Others would have turned a blind eye.”

Remember - in Australia, the ‘Liberal Party’ is the main conservative party (or at least it should be - certain elements have been dragging it to the centre and to some extent even through it, since Howard’s day).

I emailed John Howard telling him how much I admired him and how sorry I would be to see him go.

AND HE SENT ME A LETTER THANKING ME. Not a form letter.

I couldn’t believe it, still have the letter and still believe he is the best leader Australia has ever had in the past hundred years.

Here is an observation: it doesn’t appear that Mr. Howard had a Secret Service-like detachment surrounding him. By contrast, Richard Nixon relinquished his Secret Service protection in 1985, the only president to do so according to Wikipedia.

Our former Prime Ministers are only given security if there is considered to be a specific threat to them. It’s generally considered there’s no need.

Tony Abbott was assaulted by a ‘same sex marrriage’ campaigner in 2017, but I can’t think of any other case where an ex-Prime Minister has been attacked.

Howard is a true gentleman.

And Duterte is not, but my wife and her whole family voted for him, and still support him, for his stance on drugs. 😁

Howard remains my Prime Minister. He was not perfect but is a noble man who stuck by his beliefs.

Probably another reason liberal ex-presidents would fight tooth and nail to keep tax funded security.

I’d offer 4 years max after term. After that, hire their own or do without.

Misleading article. You have to read all the way to the end to discover that Howard was protecting the *assailant*. The woman was the instigator of the fight. She has an arrest record and had a restraining order against her. Further, her victim was a neighbor so this wasn’t even domestic violence, just regular old assault.

Here’s the money quote, from the Daily Mail version of the article:

“A 44-year-old woman was charged with breaching an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order. She was granted conditional bail and will appear at Manly Local Court on Tuesday.”

My understanding is that both the man and the woman are regarded by police as aggressors in this case. The man has not been charged because there are questions as to his mental competence.

The woman has been charged with breach of an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order, which means it is considered a domestic violence case - this suggests there is a relationship between the two, because if they were simply neighbours, it would have been an Apprehended Personal Violence Order.

It will be interesting to see what happens at Court tomorrow (if it actually gets reported).
