“And why is it called “trans” if it only goes 0.8 Mach?”

It’s a jet “that wants to be a propeller plane”.

Howard Hughes would approve.

And fly in confidence that no Muzzie on the tarmac is going to “forget” to install that locking pin.

The transonic region starts at about mach 0.75. Things happen in the range mach 0.75-1.2 which engineers need to take into account.

Thanks... Near-sonic might have been a more accurate label

Looks but not as much function.

Biplanes needed more lift area, two sets of wings were required, for lift and better control.

For the 777x its about a truss providing support for the single wing.

And why is it called “trans” if it only goes 0.8 Mach?

Was wondering the same thing. Trans means across, so I'd expect this to go past Mach 1. Mach 0.8 is about 15% faster than what they're using now, a marginal improvement but not revolutionary.

It sure is a good thing that aircraft do not have any other networked control systems that Achmed and Mad Mo can hack into.

“Ultra Green” aircraft. All driven by the craze to reduce CO2 emissions. The first flight will probably burn algae fuel.

Transonic refers to the condition of flight in which a range of velocities of airflow exist surrounding and flowing past an air vehicle or an airfoil that are concurrently below, at, and above the speed of sound in the range of Mach 0.8 to 1.2.

Airflow over the wing in certain regions, certain circumstances can go transonic. The supersonic boundary beings to affect aerodynamics well below the speed of actually breaking the sound barrier.

You are thinking of the aero spikes on the SR-71 engine nacelles that moved in and out, in and out. Like a squeeze box.

It’s called that because it’s not supersonic (exceeds speed of sound). It’s max speed is under that.

Someone explained it better, I was far too simplistic.

Thin folding wings, supersonic speeds, what could go wrong?

Bi planes

Trans sonic wing

The LBGTQRS community will love it.

Foreign airlines that face pressure from the Greens and their national government to reduce CO2 emissions may consider the design. If enough want it, Boeing will build it. Of course, just putting such a design out for public tends to excite the Green lobby and pressure Airbus and other manufacturers, potentially forcing them into commercial missteps while Boeing moves a better design along in secret. Boeing’s unbuilt blended wing body and Sonic Cruiser designs seem to have helped lead Airbus into its ill-fated decision to build the A380. With airline interest and production tapering off, that immense beast of an aircraft will never come close to paying off its costs, while Boeing expects to (eventually) book profits from its 787.
