Tim Tebow's Engagement Draws Insulting Media Responses
Newsbusters.org ^ | January 12, 2019 | Jay Maxon

This week's engagement of Tim Tebow demonstrated how judgmental media continue dismissing male behavior at both ends of the spectrum. Respectable Christian role models like Vice-President Mike Pence and Tim Tebow are often insulted for upholding honorable standards, right along with the disgraced abusers who spawned the #MeToo movement. While some media responded politely, Tebow's recent engagement also sparked another round of personal attacks by biased media who deem him "polarizing." None more so than from Deadspin's Tom Ley.

Ley's story on Tebow, who has chosen to remain celibate until marriage, is crassly headlined: "Tim Tebow to have sex soon." He referred to Tebow as the "Famously abstinent former football star and current baseball scrub ... ." Although "scrub" usually refers to bench-warmers in sports, Tebow has been a starter on his New York Mets' minor league teams the past two seasons.

While walking with his girlfriend on the family farm in Florida, Tebow dropped to one knee and said: “Demi Leigh Nel-Peters, I love you. Demi Leigh Nel-Peters, will you marry me? As Nel-Peters said yes, Tebow slipped a 7.25-carat solitaire ring on her finger. “This ring is internally flawless,” he said. “Just like you.” South African singer Matthew Mole walked up to the future Mr. and Mrs. Tebow and sang one of their favorite songs, The Wedding Song.

Sounds like a wonderful story and a match made in Heaven, right? Not to the begrudging Ley, who calls it "awkward romancing."

Ley ends his classless, small-minded post with one final insult: "Congratulations to the happy couple, and to the 31-year-old Tebow on his forthcoming loss of virginity."

Surprisingly, a marriage-and-family-happy Mormon newspaper also reacted to the news in a critical way. Herb Scribner wrote in The Deseret News that "Tebow’s dating life has been anything but smooth sailing. As I wrote back in 2015, Tebow's chaste lifestyle fell under scrutiny after his former girlfriend, Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, ended their relationship because of 'his virginity vow,'” US Weekly reported at the time.

Scribner reminded his readers that sports media outlets mocked Tebow over his breakup with Culpo and posted links to this New York Daily News headline “Tim Tebow still can’t find the end zone as girlfriend Olivia Culpo breaks it off over lack of sex” and the CBS quote, “Apparently an NFL job isn’t the only thing Tim Tebow can’t hold onto.”

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports reported on the engagement by calling Tebow "one of sports' most polarizing careers," who flamed out as a first-round NFL draft pick and one-time comeback artist of the Denver Broncos.

The Boston Globe's Jon Couture localized his critical remarks on Tebow, straying well beyond the engagement topic:

"He failed to make the Patriots as a third-string quarterback in 2013, cut at the end of training camp after completing fewer than 40 percent of his passes in three exhibition games. Tebow similarly failed to make the Eagles in 2015, then signed a minor-league contract with the New York Mets a year later."

The Big Lead's Jason Lisk wrote, "Tim Tebow remains out here making the rest of us look bad with a massive rock, a specially engraved bench, and some cheesy lines."

It was refreshing to see that anti-conservative media outlets like USA Today and Yahoo Sports just reported the straight facts without negative comments.

In a classy move, Robin Meade of CNN Morning Express offered congratulations and "much love" to the happy couple.

I thought the left said not the shame and bully people no matter what their sexual choices, even if they choose not to have sex (asexuals).

They can’t stop their constant hypocrisy. It’s like they don’t see it.

In before the “Tebow was run out of the NFL because he is openly Christian” sector.

So tacky to talk about private stuff like that. I hate people who do that.

Methinks Tebow wasn't interested in driving in the HOV/HIV lane represented by The Slut Culpo.

Just more reprobate journalists coming out of the closet. Actually, I think they are all jealous!

I never understood what exactly this guy did to be so demonized and ridiculed by the media to the degree that it nearly destroyed his career.

He is vilified and hated (what outspoken TRADITIONAL Christian isn't these days?), but career destroyed? Not exactly.

Russell Wilson and Dew Brees are outspoken Christian QBs in the NFL, as well as Aaron Rodgers and a few others.

I thought sex was a personal matter. That doesn’t apply if you’re a conservative or Christian.

They hate Christianity and traditionalism period. Understanding that makes the media reaction 100% predictable.

Never heard of Tom Ley, but I’m gonna guess he’s the prototypical angry queen homo.

Bottom line not just for Tim Tebow, but for all believers who do the will of God.

It's every day everywhere in the news. The media have nothing but hatred for anything good or holy.

He seems like a decent guy. He was a middling football player.

He was a middling NFL player. Winning a Heisman Trophy and leading his team to two national titles suggests that Tebow was a great cfb player.

It has always amazed me how much Tebow's decency offends people. (BTW, I'm not suggesting you're in that camp). I wish Tebow nothing but the best just because his successes offend the right people.

Good for him and the girls who passed because of lack of sex before marriage are the big losers there.

Any guy with those kinds of morals is not someone I would expect to cheat on his wife either.

I hope this woman is worthy of him, and I hope they are happy.

IIRC, Tebow is openly anti abortion and he is a Christian.

He also is famous for "taking a knee" during NFL games.

Not the cool/woke/hip way that Colon Kapernick takes a knee, Tebow was praying and, well, you just can't have that sort of chit going on in public.

His game wasn’t suited to the NFL. So what? He was a heckuva college player - arguably one of the greatest of all time.

In baseball, he’s done reasonably well after not having played baseball for several years due to football. He might never make the major league. In that he’d be no different from lots of other players who did not win heisman trophies and national championships in another sport.

Other than that he is by all accounts an extremely nice guy who has never been mean or judgmental towards anybody. I challenge anybody to find one quote he’s ever made or one sneering remark directed at others who do not share his faith.

The unpardonable sin Tim Tebow committed is not only in being a White Southern Christian Male but in giving the Leftist Media absolutely NOTHING they could ever use to call him a hypocrite. They’ve been DYING to call him a hypocrite ever since he came onto the national scene and he’s plainly not one. That has made them absolutely furious.

The media have nothing but hatred for anything good or holy.

And the left.

Every day they prove that there is a devil cause nothing else could explain the hatred of righteousness that we see on display from the left.

That's why I threw "nearly" in there. I don't follow sports very closely so I was just going by my own casual observations.

Yes, I meant as a NFL QB. He is 1,000 times the athlete I could ever be. And I was decent in my time.

I am not sure why anyone gets worked up about another’s religion. Based on what I’ve seen, he was just responding to questions. My guess is if you met him on a plane you would not talk about religion.
