They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;

These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.

For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

Was aquatinted to a fella who worked on commercial fishing boats. Met him after 10 years of not having seen him. He was cleaning floors at a blood bank. I called him by name. He barely recognized me. Told me he was doing public service work as part of his DWI arrest. We talked a bit about this and that then I was off. A few months later a friend of mine who knew him called. He said ‘did you hear about Ted?’ Seems he was working as a Hand on a long line codfish boat that was trying to negotiate moriches inlet in rough weather when the boat flipped. He didn’t make it. The rest of the crew made it ashore.

Mike Rowe on dirty jobs talks about the time he was on a grab boat in Alaska. He complained to the skipper about how unsafe things were.

“My job isn’t to keep them safe. It’s to make them filthy rich.”

Mike Rowe does a thing now called “Safety Third”. Mainly - don’t expect all the slogans and signs and OSHA laws to keep you safe. Only YOU can keep yourself safe.

It certainly is an unforgiving monster when its angry. The power is incredible.

When I see lists of the most dangerous professions, it seems like professional fishermen is always near the top along with loggers.

Sad situation.

Rest in peace.

The boat was not on the TV show, though.

When at sea, your life belongs to God. Spent a few years on an old C-2 hull. Thirty foot swells coming out of Capetown.

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walkedst on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe’er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

-William Whiting

I am a near shore boater. Watched and read plenty about the dangers of entering or leaving these bars. Scary stuff glad I do not have to deal with.

According to OSHA, commercial fishing is the deadliest occupation. Construction was second. 2016.

Probably 2017 too.

Eternal Father, strong to save -William Whiting
That is called “The Navy Hymn,” because the USN adopted it. But it was written by a British civilian who was concerned for friends traveling at sea.

There are verses in current use which were written to make "Eternal Father, Strong to Save” “joint” in the sense that one verse is for the Navy, one for the Army, and one for the Air Force. Which is a nice thought, perhaps, but lacks the emotional/spiritual power of the original.

Some of those newer verses are a valiant effort, but they lack the scriptural punch of the original.

Commercial fishing is much more dangerous than being a fireman or policeman.
