Believe it or not they get unemployment benefits. At least in the communist blue states.

Whoa!? If I'm employed as a .gov employee and the government closes....and I go on unemployment....and then when the government opens back up get full back pay, I would think that I would have to pay back the unemployment benefits.

They do, but when they get the back pay after the shutdown, which they always get, they have to pay it back. So it is sort of a loan from the state to help them out. I really don’t have a problem with that. Many folks live paycheck to paycheck.
On the other hand,if you are a government worker and don’t have a plan for a shutdown, you are stuck on stupid.
