I'm pretty sure he used one of those apps that have been around for a couple of decades and just keep getting better, where you give it any two images/photos of faces (eg Frankenstein and your Ex, or an ugly dog and Ross Perot, etc), and it slowly transforms the image from one to the other. So then you peruse all of the intermediary images that it generated and pick the best one - which will usually be near the 50% mark - and use that.
